signal victory over the Russians in
and around tbe city of Makden, captaring
that city and almost completely
annihiliating the Russian
- army ander General Kuropatkin. It
is estimated that the Russians lost in
killed and wounded 155.000 men,
while the Japate^e lc a* is not given.
Tne remnants of tbe Russian army
has retreated behind the fortifications
of Tie Pass, twenty-five miles
awav, where General Kuropatkin is
trying to reorganize his scattered

Bob Small and John No!1, two
white men were convicted of murdering
a negro and also shot a white
man and his horse od a public road
in Darlington, some few months ago
Small w?s sentenced to be executed
on the 5th day of May 8Dd Noll, who
was recommended to the mercy of
the court, got a life time sentence in
the penitentiary. It is said that the
murdered negro was a bard working
and in* ffrnsive snd the murder was
unprovoked and committed while the
white men were under the ii licence
of whiskey. It is probable that Gov.
Hey ward will not interfere with the
sentence of the court

contract for a new Hoe Press, which
will print, when occasion demands,
twenty four pages at once, folding

time. This necessitates the purchase
of far more extensive stereotyping
outfit, and in addhion to this, the
company is tearing down the old,
and building a new two story building
to give more room in the composition
and make up room. Work
on tbe uew bundu g began this week,

wilt be dipped at once, and it is
hoped to get it in operation within

Dr. Souknistfit Dead.
Dr. "W J Bouknigbt died at his
home on E mwood Avenue, Columbia,
last Sunday, in the 69 ih year of
bis age. Dr. Bouknigbt was a Dative
of this county having been born in
"Dutch Fork." whu-e be spent tbe
best days of bis life. He wbr highly
esteemed by h?s Btifcbbors and
friends for bis. manly, upright
character, strict integrity and kindness
of heart and band. There survives
birn to mourn bis departure,
beside a host of relatives aDd friends,
throe daughters, a* follows: Mrs.
P. H. HaitiMrs. R C Keenan
and Mrs. S H Owenp, all residing
in Columbia. The interment
was in E mwood Monday.
Tbe town council held its regular
montby meeting last night.

of Lexington charge of the Evangelical
Lutheran church, has been notified
by Rev. Mr. Kaeece, the new
pastor, that he will preach at Nazareth
church on the first Sunday in
