We had a pleasant call from
County Super visor Langford Monday.
He informs us that on account of the
inclement weather he is a little behind
in appointing road overseers fl
I - and work in the other departments i
of his office. He is very anxious that
the overseers, as well as the people
generally, put the roads in as good
condition as possible under the circumstances.

Up to the Farmers.
Theodore Price, the great New
York Cotton Bear, laughs at the idea
of the cotton farmers organizing and
curtailing the production of cotton.
He says the farmers have no faith in
one another, they are narrow, selfish
and ignorant and only have sense j
enoogb to be r?ewers of wood and j
drawers of water for the cotton gamblers
and speculators. Will our farmers
confirm this opinion of themselves
by making more cotton this
year than they can profitably sell?

A Sad Accident.
A peculiar accident occurred at
Batesburg last Saturday. The sweet
little girl baby of Mr. and Mrs. H.
T. Wright, of Batesburg, lost her
life. The circumstances surrounding
the sad accident was indeed heart
rending. Id the afternoon of that
day several little girls were engaged
at tbe Wright homo in a game of *
bide and seek and getting tired of
the game quit, and then for the first *
time noticed the absence of little
Annie. Search was made immediate- i
ly and after some time she was found t
fallen head foremoBt into an empty 5
post hole half full of water. The j
Bmallnes8 of the hole prevented her ]
from extricating herself, or. making c
any outcry. When found her body 8
was wedged tightly in tbe hole, so
much so that some difficulty was ex- i
perienced in getting her out.
The deplorable occurance has cast
a gloom over the entire community j
and the bereaved family have the .
sympathies of tbe entire county.

Russo- Japanese. |
Fightiog on a large scale is in ?
progress between tbe Russians and

ing the Japanese from a position in

' i-? the Japanese move against the
Russian left wiDg, which threatens,
unless quickly checked, to oblige
Gen. Kuropatkin to abandon the
positions on the Hun river, which he

winter. There is no confirmation of
the report that the Russian commander
in chief has notified the emperor
that retreat northward has become
imperative.
