Held the Cotton.
Columbia Record, 24th iust.
According to Mr. E D. Smith, the
President of the South Carolina
Cotton Growers,' association, the
binks of this state are prepared to
loan any amount of money on cotton
wr.icb h now being held by the
farmers and every assistance has
been promised the asscciau-ju by the
leading financiers of the state. Mr.
SuiitD was in UiH city lor the lecture
this evening before the business men
of Columbia, at which an appeal is
made to conttibute funds for the
support of the movement, and gave
out an interview in the form of a
statement aa to ibe progress of the
work.
If the farmers com be per-uaded
to hold their cotton for thirty or
sixty days t hey on get rid < f ail of
it for from 10 to 12 cents. I am convinced
that ibe "churls' are in a bsu
way for their cotton and that they
must have it in thirty da'ie. Therefore
it is plain that if the farmer can
be persuaded not to accept, anything
less than 10 cents and not be templed
by S cents, be will once more be on
his feet and in shape to sign the
pledge for the next tetson.
"Any farmer desiring to know
where he can obtain money in advance
for his cot loo c?n wii'e lo bis
county chairman and tbe information
will be for warded from fcho central
office.''
M r Smith is principally interested
in tbe oivHciz-idicD of the Cotton
Planters* Commission nod Holding
company, for which be has >1 copy of
tbe charter obtained in New Orleans
The company proposed to raise
enough money to bold or take up anj
amount of coitoti at 10 eeuts whicti
tbe poorer farmer cannot sffird tc
bold It is necessary that a c?rtaiti
amount of stock be lak-m by.tbe
farmers of this Sia'p, and for this
reason Mr. Smith will deliver a number
of lectines in the various towns ol
tbe State.
The banks have giv^n assurance
