Washington, January 19?Secretary Hay lias securedpositive assurances from the powers that there will be no attempt, npon the integrity of Ciiinese territory. Recently it was reported that some of the powers contemplated extending the territorial possessions they already "had in China at the conclnsion of the war in order to maintain what they called the balance of power in the east, asserting that the outcome of the war would be a readjustment of Chinese territorial boundaries. A circular note was dispatched by Secretary Hay to the powers,, based on this information, with the result that they have now all positively disclaimed any sncli intention. Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachain Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, wliich is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. John Relk, a carpenter, was shot and killed at Fort - Mill, York county, last week by Constable Mills and Policeman Hall while trying to escape from them. There were five persons lynclied in South Carolina during 1904 and only two executed according to law. Two of the five were lynched for murder, one of them being a white man. The reports of the Solicitors of the State show tliat there were only 175 homicides in South Carolina in 1904 against 222 in 1902. The 1st circuit had 23, the 2nd 44, the 3rd 15, the 4th 14, the 5th 11, the 6th 26, the 7th 16, the 8th 26. Stomach Troubles and Constipation. J*n. 20?-The National Goods Road*' convention was addressed today by Henry Long, president of tbe F'^id* association, wfac declared that Fioiidais building roads cheaper than the national governments builds. Ac ovation was given Senator Latimer, of South Carolina, who was introduced as the author of the bill / b fore congress for federal apprcpriation for building roads througout the country, the distribution to be made upon a population basis. He eaid: "We appropriate money for build ing canal*, cleaning out harbors jd rural mail delivery, but some people assert that we cannot constitutionally appropriate money for building roads. I say it has been done and that congress has the undisputed right to make such appropriation. The Atlanta News is advocting a "Define Democracv," and a return to Jtffrrsonian principles is urged by many. As to the idiotic cry for a return to the methods and practices of Thomas Jefferson nothing need be said. We cannot move the finger of time backward. We cannot run the hands of the clock back to former days. I > is needless to urge that the former days were better tbau these. The world moves and we move with it. In science, politics, religion and good government we have made wonderful progress in a hundred years, and we are not going backward aloDg any of these lines. If the Democratic party,or the people of the South, would join the offices of the United States they must so, to speak, trim off the dead wood and take on new life and Dew ideas. The old, antiquated, repudiated and out of date aims, objects and principles will never win control of the couutry. If we would gain ascendancy, we must cast aside the burdens that have brought defeat. We must rise to something higher and better than to be scolds and fault tinders. A man has very little use for profanity at home when his wife never stops to think whether shewants suffrage or not. Death, of J. L. Cauchman. Edgefield, Jan. 20.?Edgefield is terribly and most sadly shocked to night by the very sudden death of Mr. Jacob L. Caughman, cashier of the Farmers'bank here. Mr. Caughman was only 35 years of age, in the prime of a useful and successful career. His death was due to heart failure. Hie loss to the town and county will be widely felt and deeply mourned. He was one of the most substantial and influential citizens. Gloom encircles the little town at this sad and sudden loss to her best citizenship. Mr. Caughman is survived by bis wife and one child.
