candidate for governor in the
late election, ba? lost 1,182 of bis
plurality of 5,275 by the action of
the supreme court in ordering tbe
election commssion to eliminate five
precincts from tbe returns. His
plurality in tbe State, however, still

Farmers of Twiggs, Wilkinson,
LaureDS &nd Palaeki counties, Ga,
have at a mon?*??r mass meeting decided
to hold 10,000 bsles of cotton
which they now have in hand, until
it will bring 10 cents per pound in
the market.
The people west of here are anxiously
waiting for the trolly line.
What say the merchants of Columbia
in regard to this matter? If this
road were boilt the business of
Columbia would be increased a bun
area 10m.
Senator Tillman baa sent to this
office a copy of the Congressional

The British steamship Davenfcry,
Capt. Bailer, which ran aground
about three miles cff St. Helena batSaturday
afternoon, was pulled of

efforts of five tugs.

Shortage of Fuel.

?There is a probability that there
will be a shortage of' fuel and food
among the Chinese this winter.
Firewood is quoted at $40 per ton
and food is selling at three times its
normal value, with the eDd of tte
supply in sight. The Japanese are
paying Chinese laborers treble their
ordinary wages and also are paying
market prices fur all the fuei and
supplies they purchase The cold
weather continues. The military
situation is unchanged.
