The B^z-iar to be held by the ladies of Peak on Tuesday eight, December 20 b, in the school house promises to be quite a success. All sorts of attractive things for Christmas presents in the way of handkerchiefs, aprons, collars, workbags, pin cushions, toys and dolls will be on the Christmas tree to be sold in surprise packages. There will be dollteB of every kind and variety, wearing the latest and daintiest of clothes. Other features will be a post office, fortune telling and a cake wait. Tbe supper will consist cf oysters, pickles, sandwiches and coffee. Theolj-cfc is to raise funds for school improvements, and the public is most cordially invited. Mr. G A. Swygert spent last Wednesday at Cbapin. Mr. W M Wilson was in Colum bia a few d?ys last week on bue-iness. Mr. W. B. Wise, of Prosperity, was in town last Tuesday. Death. Last Thursday evening the little town of Gilbert was shocked very much when the new6 came that Mrs Lillian May Pooser nee Dociy of Perry's, was dead. Tbe corpse came up-on tbe early train Friday morning and the remains were laid to r&9t Friday afternoon in tbe Methodist cemetery in this place. Rev. O. N. Rountree and Clerk of Court Samuel B. George are in attendance. Arthur White, colored, was committed to jail on last Thursday charged with raping the person of a colored woman. The crime is alledged to have, been committed in the neighborh<xxl of Swansea. Mr. Claude Gantt, of that place, brought the prisioner and delivered him to the Sheriff. Dr. Rice B. Harman and his sister. Miss Vinnie, returned Sunday from Baltimore where the latter underwent a very painful and delicate operation. Miss Vinnie stood the trying ordeal remarkably well and her condition is much improved. Dr. A. E. Boozer, of Columbia, accompanied them to Baltimore and rendered valuable assistance in the operation. Hawkios, had died at the home of i | Mrs Helen Stein, the youogestdaugh- J ter of the deceased, on the 11th. The body was brought to Prosperity yes- ^ tetday and laid beside the remains a of the huoband of her young womanhood. | Mrs. Hawkins was well known in this place and county, where she was 1 highly esteemed for her many Christian virtues in her secular and church life. She was born in this county and before her marriage was a Miss Wingard. She leaves six children, being Mrs. Emma Kaminer, of Spartanburg, Mrs G. T Graham, of this place, Mr. John Hawkins, of Newberry, Mrs. Jennie Holman, of Orangeburg, Mr. C. D Hawkios, of Columbup, Ga, and Mrs. Helen Stein, of Norfolk, Ya.
