the judge advocate of the army as decided
that negroes cannot b ? enlisted for c astdefense
service without a special act of Congress.
Gen. Barry had proposed to establish
such garrisons on tb * South Atlantic
and Gulf coasts. It is a iathor curious decision
of the judge advocate since it is held

white man. It is a wonder, too, that the decision
was allowed to be promulgated before
tiie election, as it seems to be a direct slap at
the brother in black by the administration.

Ernest Moore, E^q., of Lancaster,
has been appointed by Governor
Heyward to bold a special term of
court at Abbeville.

Crazed by drink, H rry Bowles,
of Brookline, Mess., shot and killed
his wife at their home and a few
minutes later killed policeman McMurray,
who was attempting to arrest
him.
Johnnie Partridge, a pupil of the
Jonesboro, N. C, high school fell
while standing at the blackboard
and died in a few minutes. His
death is attributed to the excessive
use of cigarettes.

of success, T. E Leroy, a
tramp, was offered and accepted
