A progressive I spirit seem to be abroad in our small' city. We trust soon to be numbered with the foremost. The Ridge Baptist Association Sunday School Convention met here the past week and a large number of delegates and visitors were in attendance. The meetings were attended by much enthusiasm and a multitude of people enjoyed themselves. Dinner waB served on the grounds. Tuesday and Weduesday which was bounteous and the best. Speeches and reports of the most encouraging nature were heard, showing the work in an encouraging state. Among the notable persons present, R?v. Dr. i Poteat, President of Furrnan University was numbered. He made an address on Tuesday night, on the education of the single child to a crowded house. Wednesday aod Thursday nights R-v. Jabez Ferris of Camden, preached and yesterday the church in conference extended him ?a call to become their pastor. Batesburg is to lead eff in the county campaign "Wednesday next and we trust press and people will be out in full force to greet the festive candidate. Crops are fine but the mystery is how it can be with so little rain. The dry weather still continues and the water problem is becoming a Berious one. Rev. E. T. HarmaD, of the Sandy Ron pastorate, conducted services at Mt. Hebron yesterday. Rev. J. D. Shealy filled Mr. Herman's appointment at Sandy Run and conducted communion services. Mr. J. Ed. Shealy was called to the bedside of his daughter, Mrs. W. T. Sanford, at Vidalia, Ga., last Friday. Later telegrams announced her death. It seems that it is about time for the announcement of the programme for the Newberry College reunion, which is held at this place annually on Friday before the third Sunday in August. Perhaps the most successful meet- j ing of the South Carolina Press Association ever held has just ccme to a close after a session of four days duration at White Stone Lithia Springe, in Spartanburg county. A number of interesting papers were read treating tbe different departments of the printing business in a masterly and entertaining manner. The most of theee papers, especially those dealing with the business department, were very thoughtful, bearing the ear marks of care and study in their preparation. They contained practical suggestions and wholesom e advice as to the conduct % and management of tbe finances of the printing business. We want to say right here that these meetings are inj creasing in interest and the change of i views and! experiences are helpful and of considerable value. It is claimed that the hotel at White i Stone Lithia Springs has the reputa- j tion of being one of the largest I brick buildings in the State.
