The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, June 15,1904. Reminiscences. By Progress. The year 1845 is known as the dry year. A fair crop of wheat was harvested, but all o i e crcp were almost s complete little rain fell from April t > A j&. o>rely enough to wet a man iU Li& suli t sleeves. I do not think upland cjrn averaged .more than half a bushel per acre. There being no railroads the people to haul their coru from North MVIVt ww _ _ Carolina and Tennessee. It was the dry year that taught tbe people the value of swamp laode, and the owners of low lands brought them into cultivation as rapidly as possible and 6uch lands were eagerly sought for afc greatly advanced prices. For quite awhile these low'ard3 produced heavy crops of com, but in course of time these lands became less profitable by washing away and the streams filling np with sand, so that for many years farmers prefer level uplands to tne common bottom lands. In 1852 we had a big freshet and in 1S53 anot&er. a,me screamy wext? higher at the first freshet, others, the last. Tbe3e freshets were known as the August freshets. Nothing like them since then to the 6th of Jure last, when the Pacolets and Liwson's Fork surpassed them in volume and destruction of lives and property. The tno=t important event of the last fifty years was the secession of the Southern States from the UaioD, that terminated in the civil war, of which % 4 we have plenty cf history. I wiii only refer to a little home experience at the beginning of that unhappy event. After the first call for volun- | teers and quite a number of our best j blood h?d gone into service there | , came another call. The day was set j for all whose blood tingled with a \ epark o' patriotism to meet at Bo- | mar's old field, the muster ground of the Toirty Sixth Regiments. Speakers were there to advocate the justice of our cause and appeal to the pa- I trioti?m of the boys of the old Iron District. A loDg line was formed and all who would volunteer were asked to step three paces to the front, i Enough stepped forward to make a large company, which was afterwards known ae Co. 'T' of the Holcombe Legion, S. C V. After drilling and practicing for actual service for sometime we were ordered to report to Col. P F. Stevens, commander of the Holcombe Legion at Charleston, now comes the tryiDg ordeal. Why bad I volunteered? I had scarcely anything, but a wife and little chil dren but I had loved my country and had some patriotism'and yet I had a wife and four little children almost entirely dependent upon my labor for a liviug. To say "good by, with a prospect of never meeting them again, was like tearing out the heart while living. Sw.me soldiers say to charge a battery was the most trying thing; others, to charge a line of infantrj; yet others will say to be going into battle and be constantly meeting the litter bearers bringing out the wounded and dying; but I say the most trying experience of warfare with me was when I had to say good by to a weeping mother and a loving companion and little child;en all clinging to me as if they could not let me go and had to tear * J-L: I away hold iiifcir xoyiiig eniuiace.
