The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, June 1, 1S04. Brookland Ripples. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Movement is now being made by ifce trustees in order to bring about -Borne concert action to improve and enlarge the school. For the past four years two schools have been in operation here, one controlled by the trustees for the county, the other conducted in the interest of the Colombia Mills Company's operators. It is generally thought that the two schools will consolidate this session, provided ample room can be had to accommodate the pupils. The <!?iestion which now confronts the -irusteee is a suitable building: sufficiently large to meet this demand. During the iast few years the building used by the trustees for school purposes has been rented from a joint stock company which owns the building, the erection of which was doDe through the indomitable activity of Capt. M. H Witt, A. D. Shull, G. A. Guignard and others. It is very evident that these men were prompted a that time to supply a needed want and were not actuated in their efforts for personal gain, for well can it be said, that in their management of this property only a reasonable rent ha9 been charged, barely sufficient to keep the building in good ?? > > > Sa oo if 10 tVia ntrn^ra hau. xcyaiit ao AW ic, iuv v,'**UV4U UM T icg never realized aDy declared dividends from their investment, Baturally, they feel loathe to remedy the conditions, and the trustees Lot being the owners of the property lor school purposes are not disposed to improve and enlarge property which they have no control over. It seems to the writer that with such philanthropic and publjp spirited men as the stockholders of this enterprise are composed of that they would either sell to the trustees and their successors this property at a nominal figure, or better still, perpetuate their names as benefactors to the cause of education by donating their interest to a community so needful of any generosity tending to promote the Scerest of education in this age of progressivenees. We re being recognized as a town second in size and population tc Done in this county, and we should awake from our lethargy and prove ourselves truly great by having a school buildl _ 3 11 ing eumcienay large ana wen cquiped to meet the requirements of a community so progressive. The municipal election will come off Saturday, May 28;h. Several candidates have announced themselves for intendant and wardens, and it is to be hoped from the material in the race that the voters will exercise good judgment in their election of officers for the next year. M. H. Witt, W. C. Cottingham and W. D. Dent have returned from the K. of P. Grand Lodge which wa3 held in Greenville, S. C. : E. W. Shul), who has been quite sick and confined to his room for i more than a month, is recovering. Gladys and Bryan Dent are visit- i ing relatives at Irmo. 1 Henry Buff is now occupying his j beautiful home recently erected on Oak street. 3 M. H. Witt is improving his home by having some additional work done i and painting. The promoters exercised their ingenuity in selecting a name and called it a Fun-Flower Carnival. The name was intended to be unique and attractive and certainly caught the attention of the public.
