It is a raFe thing that LexiDgton
allows her pi?t<r c unties to take the
lead in any movement, baving for its
object the good i f iLe county. As a
rule she generally leads the van, but
we are compelled to acknowledge that
in regard to the matter of buildiDg j

her. A'ready two steel bridges have j
been built across the Saluda connect- j
ing the two counties, and steps are ,
being taken to build the third. Lexington
has none to her credit, although
the building of one across
Saluda river has become to be a public
necessity and the demand for it
is growing and will continue to grow.
Public economy as well as public
policy, if there were do other reasons,
seems to us, would be sufficient inducements
to build the bridge. Some
thincr must be done, and that quickly,

to give the people of the Fork a convenient,
6afe end sure means of crossing
the river to their court house to
discharge their public and private
duties, or something will drop. To |
place the matter squarely before the |
Commissioners, which we understand,
has never yet been done, we suggest
that the business men of this place I
get together and lay this matter be- i
fore the bosrd at its next meeting
and urge that a favorable action be J
taken.
Col. James A. Hoyt, of the Greenville
Mountaineer, one of the most
prominent newspaper men in the
State, died at his home in that city
last Friday. He wa3 well known
throughout the State as a man of |
unimpeachable character, of strong |
and unswerving convictions. As a i
soldier of the Confederacy his record I

A destructive fire broke out in
Greenwood, this State last week

One lady lost her life in the flames
and it was supposed that two men
did aho, but this proved erroneous
as they have since been heard from
The fire is supposed to have been of
incendiary origin and the Attorney
General has gone up there to make
investigations.
At the loss of something over 3000 1
men the Japs have once more succeeded
in driving the Russians from i
another stronghold, and capturing .
seventy guns. It appears that vie
tory comes dear to the Japs, but it
comes all the same.
Senator M. S Quay, senior U. S.
'Senator from Pennsylvania, died at
Beaver, Pa, last Saturday after a
long illness. Me was a prominent,
leader in republican politics and as
each had a national reputation.
