The farmers in this section are al- I
most through planting their crop.
Tbe farmers ate feeding rain so
that cotton and corn will come up.
Tbe health of our community is
very good at present.
Prof. L M. Bouknight is home
from Newberry college preparing for
commencement in June. He will be
through at that college then. We
wish him much success.
Mr. C. P. R jberson's brother, Mr.
John Robertson, has moved with his
family into the dwelling of Mr. C.
H Bouknigbt.
Our young folks en joyed a very
Dioe musical entertainment at Mr. ?
A. Bouknight's home recently.
The Shady Grove Sunday school
is beginning to practice for Children's
Pay.
Mr. A. A Melz is all smiles?its a
boy.
Lookout, girls, another widower
is in our midst. You know how widowers

As an illustration of thrift and
foresight Andrew Carnegie likes to
tell a humorous story aboot an old
Scots-woman whom be used to know
in Dunfermline.
To this poor old woman the minister's
wife said one day:
"Janet, I mean to make yen a
present of a bonnet."
"I thank ye, ma,ma," Janet answered,
with courtesy.
aTell me what kind of a boDnet
vo would like, a felt or a straw one."

Port Arthur Certaialy Sealed.
St. Petersburg, May 5.?A message
from Port Arthur yesterday
evening states that the ships cf the
Japanese fleet were then cruising cn
the horizon, and that a fresh attack
on the fort was possible. The message
adds information which tends
to confirm the Japanese contention
that the harbor of Port Arthur is
sealed, for a certainty. The dispatch
says that twelve fireships participated
in the last attempt to block the harbor.
The exact position cf eight has
been located, the position of two is
unknown while remaining were unable
to withstand the Russian fire
retreated.

from Tokio yesterday in London two

the baibor. This may be the two
referred to in the above dispatch as
in a location unknown.
A Carnival of Crime.

Judging from the carnival of crime
in the North whence come horrible
stories of whole families being wiped
cut if huebaDds and wives, the murder
of husbands by wives, the murder
of wives by husbands, the murder
of innocent children, scandals in
society, robberies on a hoge scale,
and all manner of swindling, corruption
and wickednesp, one would think
the press might get busy at home
instead of reading lessons to the
South concerning a few isolated
lynchings.
Parker's Position.
Washington, May 6?What is ailedged
to be an authoritative statement
of Judge Parker's position on
public questions bas been given out
here in an interview by Elliott Danfortb,
of New York, one of Parker's
most intimate friends. He says

duties wberever they shelter

reduced. He would smite the subsidy
monster wherever it might lift
its head. He believes the solution
of tbe trust problem would be facilitated
by a wise revision of tbe tariff.
He wopld insist on tbe use of tbe
state's- powers to regulate trusts
when these are within state bound
aries. Wberever inter-state law or
anti-trust law ate violated be would
enforce the federal law.
He would let tbe South solve its
own probleme, aDd he is in heartiest
sympathy with it.''
Mr. D^nforth expresses the conviction
tbat Paiker wiil not only be
nominated but elected.
Endorsed by His County.
W. Boyd Evans the Favorite ot the
Democracy of Marion.
The Marion county JL>amocratic
convention adopted the following
resolution unanimously:
"Whereas, W. Boyd Evans is a
candidate for railroad commissioner.
Resolved, That we, the Democracy
of Marion county, in convention assembled,
endorse his candidacy and
commend him to the voters of the
State as one qualified to perform the
duties of the iffice with credit to
himself and fidelity to the State/'
The Democratic voters of Kirby
township in Marion county, where
Mr. Evans, now a lawyer of Colum-'
bia, was born, passed the following:
"Whereas, W. Boyd Evans is announced
as a candidate for railroad
commissionet; and, whereas, we, the
Democratic voters of the township
n which he was born and reared,
knowing him to be qualified in every
particular to fill the office to which
he aspires with credit to himself and
honor to the State; therefore, be it

report on the navies of the world
credits Russia with but one completed
submarine boat. Seven have
teen ordered, but have not yet been
commenced. The United States is
building the largest number of battleships?thirteen?while

is building twelve.

Tornado's Awful Harvest.
Fort Worth, Texas, May G?Itcomplete
reports from the district
swept by the tornado indicate that at
least thirty persons were killed by
the storm in the west part of the
State.

The Czar to the Front.
Rome, May 5.?According to a
direct communion-ion received by the
pope from the Russian czar, cotwithstanding
the advice of his ministers,
he has determined to go to
the front and command the army.
Will Arrive to Late.
London, May 6.?It is believed
here that Admiral Skrydlcff, appointed
to take command of the fleet of
Port Arthur, will never reach his
command. There is a probability
that by the time he reaches MaDchuri,
the Japanese will be in control
of all approaches to Port Arthur, if
not in possession of the town itself
It is beleived that the Russians will
not give up Port Arthur without a
determined resistance, but the fall
of the town is only a question of a
short time.

London, May 6 ?Tbe Central
News correspondent at St. Petersburg
reports that the Japanese landed
at two points in the vicinity of
Port Arthur. The first landing was
at Piszewo and the second at Poit
Adams. The two places are but
twenty miles apart and on opposite
! sides of Kwang Tung peninsular, to
j the rear of Port Arthur.
