^ Profit in Poultry.
The following is from the Southern
Farm Magazine:
*'As pointers of possibilities of
profits in the poultry business, the
Florida Times-Union says that in
Volusia county, Florida, there were
last year 41,802 chickens, 9S9 turkeys,
522 ducks and 351 geese, and
the number of eggs produced wa3
389,190 dczeD, valued at $60,614
One ranch of 1,000 hens produced
10,000 dozen eggs, all of which were
sold under contract at 30 cents a
dozen the year round. One man in
Hillsboro county shipped during
February 4,020 dczen eggs, which
" netted him $987 55. Still the TimesUnion
points cut thousands of dozens
of eggs shipped into Florida every
month. . There are many States in
the country not producing eggs
equal to the demand or equal to
their possibilities in the hen line."
"What is done in Florida can be
done here. We may not be able to
Bell eggs at 30 cents a dczen the
year round, but there is always a
market for chickens and eggs, and
at a fair price.
CPlant the Sorghum Fatches.
Edgefield Advertiser.
The people generally, not only farmers
but others who have stock to
[feed, are just becoming awakened to
the fact that sorghum ranks easily
among the beet varieties of cheap
stock food. Best because horses and
mules thrive well upon it when not
worked, and cheapest because it can
be grown with but little labor and by
reason of the great quantity that can
be grown on a small area. The
horses love it, the cows love it and
as for the children and pigs they I
fatten on it. The wise and provident
owner of stock will plant largely j
of sorghum. Small areas should be !
planted at intervals. Then an abundance
of ripe, juicy, sweet forage can

ed for winter. Those who have
tried it will be certain to plant
largely and those who have not tried
it should do so.
Sunday, April 24:h, was the 10-.h
anniversary of the destruction of the
plant of he Dispatch by fire and by
the same destructive element the
home of its Editor was laid in asher.
That morniDg was a sad and trying
one for this writer. He stood by the
smoldering embers of what was his
well ?quipped printing office and bis

Not a time, however, did he lose confidence
in his people in that time of
sore distress, and he is proud to be

misplaced. He feels deeply grateful j

Exposure
to cold draughts of air, to keen and cutting
winds, sudden changes of tempera- ]
ture, scanty clothing, undue exposure of ;
the throat and neck after public speak- |
ing and singing, bring on coughs and j
colds. Ballard's Horehound Syrup is !
the best cure.
Mrs. A. Barr. Houston. Texas, writes,
January:)}. 1902: "One bottle of Ballard's
Horehound Syrup cured me of a j
very bad cough. It is very pleasant to
take." 25c.. 50c. and $1.00. Sold by The

Anxious to Please.
This tale was told by Governor
PeDnypacker, (in beginning a response
at a Pennsylvania German
banquet in Philadelphia. The story,
he said, showed the readiness of the
Pennsylvania - Dutchman to obey
those in authority:
Ia 1864 Sheridan, under orders,
burned every farm bouse from a valley
above Staunton to a certain point
below Winchester. A band of angry
rebels followed this raid, watching
for a chance to pick up any ^stragglers.
Among others who fell into their
hands was a little Pennsyivenia
Dutchman, who quietly turned to his
captors and inquired:
''Vat you fellows going to do mit
I met"
"Hang you.M
I "Vel," he said meekly, "vatever is
de rule/'
His good natured reply threw the
Confederates into a roar cf laughter
and saved his life.
