The recent forest fires did much damage to timber, undergrowth, etc. Some of these fires were set by engines on S A. L. R. R , but Mr. W. C. Johnecn, of Estelle, was on the scene of action before the fires were out. He is the claim agent for the road aod in company with Mr. W. N. McNeill, they visited the parties and effected settlements at once. In our part here the fires burnt over more than 12,000 acres. These men, Messrs. Johnson and McNeill, settled without any trouble. To the Editor of the Diopatcb: On Good Friday morning of April 1st, as the band of time pointed to "eight," we left the home of Mr. J. W. Keisler's for the Blue Star school house near Saluda river. After we had watched the wheels of th3 vehicle make maDy revolutions and received a number of j-irs over the rough roads, we reached our destination a few minutes before the appointed time. It was now time for its to go on the school grounds, we had not more than espied the beautiful decorated i building when we suddenly heard the sound of horse-hoofs and buggy wheels in the yard. This vehicle bore the admirable teacher Miss Dora Shirey and her sister, Miss Lilla, to the scenes of the school grounds. By this time a large number of frieDds uDd patroDS of the school I had gathered on the grounds. The I hour bad now arrived for the exercises to a nice audience having assembled in the school building. Mr. Olarance Shirey started up the phonograph which played the well known piece ' Quit that tickling me,1' After which the exercises were opened with prayer by Mr. William Kood, then came the address of welcome by one of the pupils which bade a cordial invitation to all those that were there; next came a Dumber of declamations and a medal contest by six young ladies who did exceedingly well and which gave the committee much trouble to decide to whom the medal was due, but after much delay with the committee the medal was awarded to Miss Lilla Sbirey as the best elocutionist and Miss Katie Drcher second best. Also an address made by the Hon. George Bell Timmerman who said he was filling the appointment made by the Hon. J. B. Towill, who was unexpectedly called to Charleston on some very urgent business. Tbe exercise of the afternoon opened with ihumc by the band. The most prominent of the afternoon exercises was another medal contest by six yonug men who sent forth some very impressive strains of oratory, this medal was awarded to Mr. Shepperd Lmdler by Dr. K. A. Price. Dr. Price made some very interesting remarks on the subject of education.
