A Bamberg Letter.
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
To the average Lexingtonian who
has become imbued with a rambling
disposition it is always a pleasure to
receive the Dispatch as it brings
news of the "old folks at home," and
causes bis memory to revert to the
days of his youth which are long
since past and gone, ily memory
ruminates upon those halcyon days
this balmy spring evening as I feebly
endeavor to pen a few lines for your
columns.
Although some distance from the
red hills and sandy plains of Lexington
I do not consider that I am "a
stranger in a strange land," for one
only has to be a resident of the hustling
little city of Bamberg a few days
to realize mat ne is among a Kina,
generous and hospitable people,
whose homes present cheerfulness
and a hearty welcome to all. Bamberg
is one of the thriving towns of
the low country, with a citizenship
thatworksin harmony for the interest
and upbuilding of the town. Being
situated in a fine agricultural country
the town injoys a good trade and a
great volume of business of all kinds
is transacted. A large cotton mill,
situated in the heart of the town,
furnishes employment to a large
number of families from which source
the merchants derive a lucrative
trade. The town has many other
industries, such as iron works, cotton
oil mill, bank smoking tobacco factory,
two newspapers, several hotels and
boarding bouses, two large buggy
and wagon manufactories, a graded

learning known as the Carlisle Fitting
school of Wuffjrd College. We have
several mercantile houses which are
weli stocked with goods that are sold
at the lowest possible figures. The
water is furnished from artesian wells
and is not altogether pleasant to the
taste of one who has never used it,
but it is said to contain mineral qualities
and is considered very healthful.
Your scribe holds a position in the
printing establishment of Mr. A. W.
KnigLt who, besides publishing the
Herald, one of the best weekly papers
in the State, does a large amount of j
'
book and job printing, which is turned j
out with neatness and dispatch. Mr.
Knight is one of the kindest and
most accomodating men that I have
ever been associated with and his
employees are very much attached to
him. He is an all-round business
man as is evidenced by his prosperknainnco

in contemplation the improvement
and enlargement of his plant and intends
to install a linotype machine at
an early day in order to turn off work
with greater speed.
Mr. Knight seems to appreciate
the worth of Lexington men. Besides
myself Mr. J. Mayo Ogilvie, a former
Dispatch typo, is employed on the
Herald and Master Junius B. Bailey,
son of your humble 6cribe, who is the
"devil" of the office, holds bis case
with all the ease and dignity of a
veteran printer.
Upon my arrival here it was my
pleasure to receive a hand-clasp from
Kev. M. W. Hook, pastor of the
Methodist church, who is also a Lexingtonian.
He is in charge of a
large and prosperous congregation
and his whole soul seems to be in his
work. He is an able and eloquent
preacher and a hard worker in his
Master's vineyard, and he holds the
love and esteem of the entire member
ship of bis church.
Appreciative of the fact that I am
intruding on your columns which
might be filled with reading matter
of more interest to your readers I
will close my rambling letter with
best wishes to the Dispatch and all
my Lexington friends.

Of disease is often the trail marked by
a woman's gown. A recent investigation
showed a horde of microbes, including
those of influenza, consumption and
a dozen other varieties, gathered in the

this is believed to indicate that, the
Chinese government is not willing to

All the Acts Signed.
Governor Heyward, says the Columbia
Stat*\ has completed the work
of signing the acts passed at the resent
session of the legislature. The
work takes some time as the bills
must be, cf course, carefully read.
The only instance in wmch toe

was that of the 'exclusive jurisdiction'
act. He also put his veto on the bill

words to prevent a convict from beng

as an act and would have become a .

Seoul, March 24 ?A strong body

the Korean troops resisted. A battle j

driven back, after having lost thirtyf

Poor Man, Such Is Luck.
A Nebraska man mortgaged his
farm to buy his wife a pair of diamond
earrings. The wife took in
washing to pay the interest on the
mortgage. On the first job she lost
one of the "sparkles"' in the suds,
whereupon she tried to hang herself
in the barn, but the rope broke and |
she fell on a Jersey cow worth 8160, j
and broke its back. Her husband I
I
then undertook to shoot the cow to |
end its misery, but the gun burst j
and destroyed his eyes, and his wife j
ran away wun a iignting-roa peciaier.

The first formal entry in the race
for Congress in the second district
was made by Mr. L J. Williams,
who paid the assessment fee of $50

are several other candidates but this
is the first that has been made, although
Gen. Jones expects others in
