The Head Law. Below we give the changed road law now in fore*: Section 1. Section 2. Provided further that all commutation tax collected shall be expended by the board of county commissioners npon tee roads in the township where the commutation tax is collected. There is a growing demand among the people residing on both sides of Saluda river for a free bride across that stream connecting the two sec tions of tbe county. TO ere are many reasons that could be advanced to show tbe urgent necessity for this bridge, but fcbey are so apparent to tbe people interested that it seems almost a waste of time to enter into SDy lengtby argument in support of | this proposition. It will give the j people of the Folk a safe and sure j means of crossing the river at any j stage of the wate-, a convenience and j privilege w' :cn they do not now en- ! joy, as is well known to everybody; j it will briDg the two sections in \ closer touch with each other and as j & result the idea that they are the i sods and daughters of the grand old j couDty of Lexington and that their j interest is one and indissolvable and I that the pulse of one section cannot be touched without the throb of the j other being felt beating ia unison j with the other; that our brothers ! across the river pay their sheckles into the county treasury to support ! the county government and are con- j sequeotly entitled to enjoy all rea- ! sonable conveniences in reaching their j court house while in the performance j of their public and private duties as j chrildren of one mother, and that it j will be a stroke of economy on the part of the County Commissioners to build this bridge as so many public roads leading to the different ferries will not be requirfd and can, therefore, be abandoned without entailing any hardship upon any citizeD, and the cost of paying the ferry bills of witnesses and jurors coming and returning from court will be saved. Besides these considerations, there are the business and social relations of life that would be enhanced and cemented were this bridge built. I These are a few of our reasons for advocating the building of this ; bridge. A Persistent Hen. The Springfield Republican tells the story of a hen that was engaged | one night in brooding over some eggs in a barrel in the livery stable where she made her home. | The stable caught fire. With the courage of the boy on the burning deck, she refused to leave her post. The top of the barrel took fire. It burned halfway do^wn, and still the hen did not move. Toe stable was almost totally destroyed, but the firemen had the flames so far under control that a stream of water turned upon the hen's apartment extinguished the blaze. The smoke did not seem to disturb the hen, nor did the flood of water pouring down the inside of the barrel.
