We learn that a disastrous woods fire broke out in the saDd bill section of this county, on Congaree creek, in r the neighborhood of Mr. G. W. Reeder, on last Friday. That from and after the ratification of this ordinance all male persons able to perform the labor herein required, between the ages ot eighteen and filty-live years, except ministers of the gospel ia actual charge of a congregation, and persons permanently disabled in the service of this State, and persons who served in the war between the States: and all persons actually attending any of the Colleges of tbe State, shall be required to annually to perform or cause to be performed labor on the streets and highways of the Town of Lexington under the direction of one of tbe Policemen or any of the Policemen of said To*n for a period of four (4) days, at such lime as the Council or Mayor may direct during the fiscal y?-ar 1904. Sec. 2. That m lieu ot performing or causing to be perlormed the labor of ten hours per day, as herein named, a commutation tax may be paid by the person so liable of two (2) dollars per year, in the following installments?One (1) dollar on or before the first day of April, and one (1) dollar on or before the first day of September; provided that persons liable under this ordinance shall have the right to supply a competent substitute to labor in his stead.
