The hippy couple have the best wishes of hosts of friends. Mrs. George A. Swygert aDd Master Lionel Suber spent a few days last week with the family of Dr. Douglas at Wbitmire's. Master Frsnois Douglas returned to his home at Wbifcmire's last week. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Summer have returned from a trip to Columbia and Charleston. Mrs. J. C. Swygert has been sick for several days with the grip. Messrs. G A. Poore and Jesse Shealy spent- last Wednesday in Newberry. Mr. Jack Counts was in Augusta ? -? I < L a lew aays nisi wee&. I Mr. Martin Wbeeler visited friends i in Peak's last week for several days. Mr. Ben Setzler, of Pomaria, was in town last week. Mr. Olin Stuck came up from Colombia on Saturday to spend the day at home. Oar town was visited on Sunday evening by wind, thunder and lighfcning. The warehouse being built by Mr. W. M. Wilson is nearing completion. Miss Yarborougb, of Jenkinsville, visited ber sister, Mrs. J. H. Bashardt, last Sunday. Mr. Lee Connor spent Sunday at borne. Mr. Mike Hope, of Hope's, was in town last Sunday. Miss E.izibeth Dominick, assisted by the ladies of the town, is srrang* ing for an entertainment to be given in the school house on Wedneeday . night, the 21th inst, the object being to raise funds for some improvements in the school house. The entertainment will be in the nature of a bazaar and among the attractive features will be a fi9h pond, a fortune tree, grab bag, a picture sale, an old fashioned cake walk, etc There will be pretty booths and other decorations. A phonograph will furnish the music. Refreshmentsx consisting of ice cream and cake will be served by pretty maidens. There will be no extra charge for admission. The public is cordially invited. E. "To the Editor of the Dispatch: We have been absent from the ' columns of the good old Dispatch for a short while, but not deserted, no not by any means. Could you Mr. Editor, or the many readers of your paper realize what I have had to do, you would excuse me without any Hesitancy. Everything is quite at presen% save now and then, a boom in cotton and the uprising of an expectant candidate. We have some good men ; down our way to put up when the harvest opens np end the men who beat 'em will have to "get tbar." Our present Senator has expressed himself to the writer that he wiii make the race for re election. The Senator wilt make it hot for some one. His record in the Senate Chamber is always for the laboring man. He has an influence there and can give his constituents better service the eomiDg four years than the past four. We still have cold weather, but I think the backbone of winter is broken?at least cracked. It is all right now, the j ice has gone and the sun is Bhinging brightly. Mr. W. D Pound killed the champion pig thus far. He went in the notch of about four hundred net. Mr. E. C. Spbaler sold bis old home estate to Mr. Milton Hutto and his property in Gaston to Mr. Z A W. Sturkie. The writer has no knowledge of our dear sister's life only she was a consistent member of the Methodist church. We trust that she was perfectly resigned to the will of God so death had no terror for her. To the ! About Ready to Sail. 1 The steamer Highlander is now on the ways at Wilmington undergoing repairs and as soon as the work is completed and the weather permits the boat will be sent on its ocean trip and then to Columbia. Goner al Manager Turner has written to the navigation committee of the chamber of commerce that he expects to have everything in readiness for the trip before the close of the present week and if au unforeseen contingency arises the initial tiip on the Congaree will be taken about the loth of the present month. The insurance s placed at from $50,000,OOu, to $90,000,000. It is considered very j fortuoate that valuable papers, stocks j and bonds in vaults in banks were not injured. This reduces the loss a great deal. It is feared that after ten days' grace the banks will be unable to satisfy the demands for ! money withdrawals. Perfect Confidence. . Washington, Feb. 12.?President Roosevelt today issued a proclamation declaring the neutrality of the United States in the war between Russia and Japan.
