A BIG- FIRE.
Seventy-live Blocks Save Been
Destroyed in Baltimore.
The city of Baltimore has suffered
from the most destructive fire ever
known. It virtually swept the
majority of the large wholesale
house?, banks, etc, and from the
humblest home and business to the
most magnificent building in the city.
The fire originated Sunday morning
at 11 a. m in the wholesale dry
goods house of John E. Hurst & Co.
It is estimated that one hundred and
fifty acres of magnificent buildings
in Baltimore have been burned. The
fire underwriters put the loss at
$200,000,000 and do not know where
the loss will stop. The fire is the
greatest in the history of the world
and now exceeds in loss the great
Chicago fire in which the loss was
nearly 8200,000.000. Some fire insurance
companies are practically
ruined by the insurance loss.
The Dumber of people thrown out
cf employment cannot be estimated
The casualties are fortunately very
few. The state milita and regulars
were called into service to preserve
order. There were more buildiDgs
afire at one time than there were
streams of water available. In the
face of such overwhelming odds the
combined efforts of the Baltimore
department as a whole, and picked
details from Washington, Wilmington,
Philadelphia and New York,
were miserably inadeq*te. The fire
raged for twenty-four hours.

Letter to A. J. Foz.
Lasington, S. C.
Dear Sir: You are interested in the
prosperity of your town. You can
contribute to it materially, and give
it a far more prosperousjook at the
same time.
Perhaps the public property needs
a good coat of paint.
Devoe will Bupply that coat with
two-thirds of the number of gallons
required of any other. Devoe will
last twice as long as any other. Devoe
i6 all paint and full-measure. JDevoe
is the strongest paint known. Devoe
1 will take care of the property, in the
I long run, for half the money required
by any other.
' The reason is stated above: Devoe
; is all paint and full-measure; the
strongest paint known.
' E D. Jewell, Corry, Pa., painted
his house 5 years ago with a mixed
paint, took 14 gallons. Last spring
he repainted with Devoe; bought 14
gallons and had 4 gallons left. Saved
$15 to $20, for painting co9ts two or
three times as much as the paint.
Yours truly,
I F. W. Devoe k Co.,
New York.
