MRaOMMMBMHiHMD The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, January 20, 1904. An Experience Meeting. Chicago News. "Speaking of New England hospitality," i be parson as he combed his m-e u takers with his fingers and l"i>k?-<i i bought fully at the design in iLe tablecloth, "I am especially impressed, because IVe come from up there. The recollection of the night I passed with a dear brother in a small MasB&chu i Betts town is still fresh upon me. *. After a frugal supper and family prayers," continued the parson, "I was piloted upstairs and shown my room. The room was uDheated, and > it was six degrees below zero outside with the north wind blowing a gale. My room was a north room and the \ wind which 'rattled the windows blew the curtains out from the glass. With chattering teeth and the gooeeflssh standing out like hives, I jumped under a crazy quilt and landed between two clammy sheets. I drew my knees up under my chin and bugged tbem with both arms all night long. When merciful sleep eame to me in sjj and seven minutes snatches 1 dreamed mac 1 was a turkey in cold storage and an Arctic explorer adiift on an ice-pan. Again, * my ice packed bcdy was being shipped to sorrowing fr ends in the South. My tpeth chattered so hard and so long that I wore them down ?Z) eighth of an inch. "At five o'clock in the morning there came a timid tapping on my chamber d^or. 'Come in,'X shouted. "The cook with a lamp in her hand opened the door. 'Excuse me, doctor,' she said, 'but I want to get butter. We si ways keep it in here because this is the coldest room in the house.' " "Out in Montana last summer," ( began the girl, who bad listened most attentively to the good doctors winter's night tale, "we stopped / late one afternoon at a tqnaw-mau's house and were invited to, stay all night. As we had been ridiDg all day we gladly accepted the invitation. "It was a two-roomed log he use, the sitting-room beiog also the bedroom. After supper the fqoaw brought fresh sheets and made up the double bed. " 'This certainly is like the eenf eroU9 west,1 we said doe to the other. 'It is most kind and hospitable for these people to give up their own bed to total straDgere,' apd we felt somewhat conscieDce-smitten at permitting it, though the fqaaw in her i broken Eoglieh ioeisted. After the light was out we began to get restless. We tossed and turned' and could not sleep. At last I said, "Mary, something is biting me.' " 'Me too,' said Mary viciously. "We lighted the lamp, and there they were?dozens of them?running for cover. I neve r put in such a night in my life We fought them all night, fcut when one perished a drzen came to bury him. We didn't close our eyes. "At daylight the squaw opened the door and stood at the foot of the bed facing us expectantly. " 'Sleep pooty goot V " 'N-o, not very,' I replied. " 'Bugs pooty bad V " 'Mighty bad.' " *S*,' nodded the fquaw, 'dat's why we ^on't sleep here no more? vSleep in corn crib.' " ? *. . A Very Close Call. ' I stack to tny engiue, although every joint ached and every nerve was racked with pain," wiiteB C. W. Bellamy, a locomotive fireman, of Burlington, Iowa. "I was weak and pale, without any .appetite and all run down. As I was about to give I up, I got a bottle of Electric Bitters, and after taking i*, I felt as well as I ever did in my life." Starting a Balky Horse. For the bem fit of those who have been caused a great deal of aDxiety by a balky horse, lost traiDS as well as terrpers and even sometimes ruined the horse, says a correspondent in the Horseshoer^ Journal. I will give your readers a remedy which, no matter how bad he is, will start such a horse 99 times out of 100. Of course it may fail one time in a hundred. When a horse balks, no matter bow badly he 6ulks or how ugly he is, do not beat him; don't use a rope on his forelegs or even burn straw under him. Qiieily go and pat him on the head a moment; take a hammer or even pick up a stone in the street; tell the driver to sit still, take bis lines, bold them quietly, while you lift up either front foot; give each nail a light tap and a good smart tap on the frog; drop the foot quickly, and then chirp to go. In 99 cases out of 100 the horse will go right on about his business, but the chiver must keep bis lines taut and not pull or jerk him back. If I have tried this once I have tried it 500 times, and every time I have suggested it. people have laughed and even bet $5 and bottles of wine that I could not do it. So far I have won every bet. This may make you smile, but a horse has more common sense than most, people are willing to give him credit for. The secret of the trick is simply diversion. I am a firm believer that with kicdness and proper treatment a horse can be driven with a striDg. Found a Cure for Indigestion. I used Chamberlain's Stomach aDd Liver Tablets for indigestion ana find that they suit my case better than any dyspepsia remedy I have ever tried and I have used maDy different remedies. I am nearly fiftyone years of age snd have suffered a great deal from indigestion. I can eat almost anything 1 want to now. ?Geo W. Emory,.. Rock Mills, Ala. For sale by The Kaufmann Drug Co.
