We are pleased to know that tbe County Commissioners are considering favorbly tbe idea of putting a steel bridge across Saluda river, at 60838 ccdveDlent place. This ie a nacve in the right direction and it should meet tbe approval cf our people. We always keep watch on the interest of our county and, in this pl&r, we see ecmethiDg that will not only be a convenience to our people but will tend to bring tbe different sections of the county into closer contact. It will remove the difficulty in crossing the river in rainy weather, nod give a thoiougbfare over which all the people may pass at any time without impediment or ferry charg< 8 If tbe bndg6 is built it will then fur Btfch tbe opportunity for a very important highway across tbe county from the Court House. It will be a main line upon which smaller roads * .1 * 1 sua loose 01 lesser lmporisow, may feed, so to speak. Ad artery of com meroe, as it were, through the upper mad north western section of our wounty; and what helps or benefits one section will, in the long run, benefit the entire people; because we will then be brought closer together and our interests will become more nearly identical. It will help both county seat and county because it will bring the Court House in easier reach of the surrounding ?cuetry, thus affording a far better market than they now have, besides, it will help the Court House, because at will iucrease the business theie v It will be a mutual stimulation, snd will sot detract one iota from the welfare, or best interest of any section of tbe county. The time has come when we no longer measate distance by miles, but by hours. This is a busy age and it is time that counts. Various ? itSaenoes are beiDg brought to bear dismember our county, one of tbe most mdepent in the State. What we must do is to hold onr own and nnr Annntv in tanfc w? rrmafc i have better roads, a abort and quick eueaim to market, and for the public welfare. We advocate those things which we believe will have a tendency to unite us more closely and be o? general ben* fu. We, therefore, commend to the thoughtful consideration of our people the idea of fcwidrDg, at some tunable poiD', a tree Jhndg across Saluda river. Besax ember that the benefits will not all be derived today or tomorrow, bat future generations will be the recipients of the good thus accomplished. The management of the State Fair Association have beld important onoAtini?* since the last State Fair o and report much enthusiasm even at this early stage Toey look for the Fair of 1904 to be the greatest in the feretory of the thirty-five years of the existence of tbe Association. The South Caiouna College Foot Bail team has won a high record in playing this game. They have recently scored 16 to 0 against the chainpioDS of Tennessee and Georgia. Soon the pop of the fire cracker w.li be heard. i It has been rumored that Hod. John Bell Towill a member of the House of Representatives from this county, will be a candidate for a place on the Board of Qontrol, at the next meeting of the Legislature. If this report be true, and we trust that it is, we take pleasure in endorsing his caDdidac-y. He is a hightoned Christian gentleman. Just the kind we need td such a position. South Carolina will have cause to congratulate herself in securing his able judg ment in the management or tne Dispensary. The success of any law depends largely on the administration, and if we do not put men of integrity in our various offices we cannot expect a correct administraI tion of the law. Ia this candidate we have a man of integrity and one in whom the entire State can well place confidence. We want the people of the State to watch him and see if be will not merit all that has been said of bim. His Chances for this office should be good. In the first place he is a man qualified and suited to fill such a po8itior; and in the second place Lexington county has never been greedy in sskiog too much for ber sons and with equal ability aDd fitness their ciaims for position should receive favorable consideration at the bands of the members of the Legislature. We feel confident however, that if Hon. John Bell Towill does mske ihe race be will wiD, because he will draw to his standard those who stand for a pure and democratic administration of affairs. According to the information cb tained by the Associated Press, the powers will this time unite in the appointment of a Christian governor of Macedonia. While it is intended that the Christians shall be protected, there is also a determination that equal protection shall be accorded the, Mussulmans. All the powers concerned are anxious to settle the difficulties in the Balkans so that they can no longer menace the peace of Europe. We have received the firBt copy of "The Field," the new county paper published at Conway S. C. It is a neatly printed and well arranged eight page paper, brilliantly edited by Mr. Jas. Henry Rice, Jr, with Mr. .T W Ooilvie. formerly nf The Dis patch office, Foreman. We welcome "The Field" as an exchange and wish it much success. Washington, Dec. 7.?The president has again shown bis devotion to Crum, the negro whom be appointed collector of customs in Cnarleeton, by 8gain sending bis name to the senate today for confirmation. We notice that speaker Cannon has placed Hon. A. F. Lever on the Agriculture Committee. A very impoitant place for his representative constituents. The citizens of Congaree aod Sandy Run sections deserve credit for the ex client work put on the State road through Huckbbaa swamp. They displaced tbe ngnt Kind ot public spirit in goiDg into their pccket bookn, supplementing the amount giv&D by the County Commissioners to put this piece of load in t-uch fiae traveling condition. Mr. Ei. Gardner was I the overseer and certainly displayed good judgment. Let other sections follow this patriotic example, at least until we can have the faulty road law, now in vogue, amended so we can have decent roads. The secret is out and Lexington oan go on living just as if tbe riddle had never been a*ked. No it can't either. Lexington is not going to be what it was before. ItB houses are going to be brighter; its people a little more prosperous? they are going to have some of their money left to buy other things with. The answer to the riddle is this: You can paint a building wuh fewer gallons of Devoe Lead and Z.nc paint than with mixed paints, and it will wear several times as long as a building painted with lead and oil mixed by hand. There's proof abundant of it all ovtr the Uuited States. There will soon be proof abundant of it in Lexington. What will people do with the rest of their mone)? THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
