The telephone exchange is just above the bank and the robbers secured the operator and tied him to prevent bis interference with their plans. . Riasoe Abe, the head of a large firm of cotton spinners of Osaka, Japan, is in Charleston making investigation concerning the cotton business of that point and of the State. Mr. Abe expects to make a tour of the South during the course of which he will visit various cotton ports. He will personally inspect the bills in this and other States. A Laurens county jury has cleared Wham who was tried for murdering Ramage. Wham, a married man; sought to enveigle to his home, in the absence of his family, a young l uiy, the neice of Ramage and even admitted his evil design. Ramage who attempted to protect the honor of his neice was shot dead by Wham. Wby don't the newspapers fulminate about the Laurens "farce?" Though murder is murder, we have not even seen or read cf a sermon against the verdict which set free a libertine who had slain the defender of a woman's honor. Dr. L. K. Sturkie, of Orangeburg, has written the governor that he will hie a petition in the case of Dr. Maxey G. Lee, who is now serving a sentence in the penitentiary for murder. Not long ago, Mr. 0. D. Lee, an uncle of Dr. Lee, notified the governor that he had withdrawn his opposition to the pardon. Dr. Lee was sent to the penitentiary for the murder of his father, and several'petitions for his pardon have been filed, one or two during Gov. McSweeney's administration.?The State.
