C., Oct. 31 The Barnum & Bailey circus has aroused extraordinary interest this rrtL- t season, xihs is uuu surpnaiijg iu 4 view of the fact that this is its first | American tour since returning from its phenomenally successful five j years' sojourn in Europe. In the Old World it excited admiration and wonder by reason of its magnitude and the marvelous way in which it was conducted. Here, at home, the unparalleled reputation of former years has beep accentuated by the truly gigantic way in which the - great show has expanded; and grown while the many new, novel and startling feats presented in the three rings, on the double stakes, in the vast aerial spaces and on the mammoth hippodrome track have excited an enthusiasm hitherto unknown ^ in arenic performances. The show opens with a splendid inaugural i> spectacle, "The tribute of Balkis." Nothing so rich in costuming or so elaborate in picturesque detail has ever bee seen in America. The arenic % performances that follow, present 300 artists in a performance of unapproachable magnitude and novelty. The world's greatest rider?, the leading manege equestrians of Europe, aerialists whose feats in mid-air are thrilling in their sensational .daring, and scores of acrobats, gymnasts, and other arenic specialists who perform now and seemingly impossible feats of strength and highly trained dexterity, contribute to what is unquestionably the grandest circus performance ever given anywhere on earth. Cyclo, the Kinetic Demon; who rides a bicycle on the inner rim of a perpendicular circle, has created a verii toV?1 o fnrnr. A BAries of exciting hiD podrome races, a world-embracing menagerie, a congress of earth's most noted ^living curiosities," and a reproduction of the famous fighting ships of the United States in/ minis- j ture, round out an exhibition that continues to be, what it always has been, the greatest show on earth. A magnificent free street parade will be given at 10 o'clock in the morning, prior to the opening performance. Remember the date, Saturday Oct. 31st. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. No one who is acquainted with its good qualities can be surprised at the 9* great popularity of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It not only cures colds and grip effectually and permanently, but prevents these diseases from resulting in pneumonia. It is also a certain cure for croup. Whooping cough is not dangerous when this v remedy is given. It contains no ? opium or other harmful substance | and may be given as confidently to a J - t T. 1 1 baby as to an aauit. ?c is aiso pieaBant to take. When ail of these facts are taken into consideration it* is not surprising that people in foreign lands, as well as at home, esteem this remedy very highly and very few are willingjto take any other after having ,' once used it. "I, of course, deeply regret the death of Mr. Gonzales, but I was forced to do what I did. "My position was fully stated in the testimony I gave on the stand. ^ ^ I did ask for a change of venue beJ cause I was convinced on account of prejudice in Richland county I could not get a fair and impartial trial in that county. Davenport, Wingo, Kv., writes, June 11, 1902: 'T want to tell you I believe Ballard's Snow Liniment saved my life. I was under the treatment of two doctors, and they told me one of my lungs was entirely gone, and the other badly affected. I also had a lump in my side. I don't think that I could have lived over two months longer. I was induced by a friend to try Ballard's Snow Liniment. The first application gave me great relief; two fifty cent bottles cured me sound and well. It is a wonderful medicine and I recommend it to suffering humanity." 25c, 50c, $1.00. Sold by The Kaufmann Drug Co. Judge Frank B. Gary. So far as the reports from Lexing ton have come under our observation in the newspapers, there has been nothing but praise for Judge Frank B. Gary's deportment on the bench during the Tillman trial. Throughout the two weeks consumed by the hearing of a case in which there was deep feeling and an element of political partisanry throughout the state; in which the ablest lawyers in South ! Carolina were arrayed against each ! other; and a trial to which public interest know no State bounds, Judge Gary has held the scales of justice in equal poise, challenging commendation of both sides for the fair and impartial manner in which he presided. Points that weae raised by counsel during the progress of the case were ruled upon promptly and positively, convincing all that the judge knew what he was about, and wanted nothing, but the law and equity in every instance. Under the exacting circumstances of this prolonged and important trial to have maintained himself with ability dionitv and strict imnartialitv. danas government and then turned pirate, with Supply Officer Johnson, has been captured by the constabulary. Johnson was killed by the crew of a native boat, which the pirates had taken sfter the steamship Victoria, which they had seized, and had been grounded by the crew. We are pleased that the arrangements have been renewed with the Home and Farm, whereby we can furnish this farm journal in club with the Dispatch for 12 months at 81.25 for both papers. Washington, Oct.16?Much satisfaction is expressed here over the London report that the decision of the Alaskan boundary tribunal gives the United States the victory. Nothing official was obtainable nor will be until the official announcement comes from London. The decision marks the achievement cf the most wonderful progress ever recorded in tee Pacific settlement of disputes between nations, as it was possible only through the act of some one member of the tribunal in voting againBt the contention of his own country. Appeal of George Rembert, Esq., Which Brought Tears to the Eyes of Ail Present at the Tiiiman Trial. John R. Barko in August! Chronicle. Lexington. S. C., Oat. 12 (special) ?Q-eorge Rembert, oDly two years a lawyer, and a former member of Tillman's regiment, was tbe second speaker in the Tillman trial tody. He is quite youtful in fac\ and more eo in appearance. Very little more than a sophomoric effort was expected from this young man. He had proceeded but a short while when he claimed the attention of all During the entire course of bis speech he was logical and at times eloquent. It was when he reached his peroration that the triumph was scored. When he pictured Jim Tillman as a colonel, beloved by privates and next apostrophized by his wife, mother and baby girls, there were many tears shed in the court room. Strong men cleared their throats, women were washed in tears and four jourors that I noticed wept. There was a weak feeling about the eyes of ail as Rembert feelingly closed his speech. Then he drew the button back by the string and the bone was promptly dislodged. In Brazil it is considered undignified for a lady to go shopping.
