Prepared for War.
Manchuria, Oct. 6 ?With tbe approach
of October 8, tbe normal
date for evocation of Manchuria,
great ?*uw is observable
among tbe J -pa.,-*,*- p? pulace, but in
diplomatic elicit* it is reaffirmed
that hopefuiiiebs prevails of an amicable
settlement of the imbroglio
- . Tk 3 T
between .Russia auu uu iuc
basis of minor concessions by Russia
in Corea and Manchuria, though
officials don't profess to expect that
the evacuation of Manchuria will be
effected on the exact date named.
Baron vonv Rosen, the Russia minister
to Japan, has returned here
from a conference with Viceroy
AlexiefF at Port Arthur, and there
has been a short conference with
Baron Komura, the Japanese foreign
minister, on October 3. Baron Komura
has since given out a hopeful
interview, but the Japanese ministers
far war and navy thereafter had long
conferences with the emperc.% Mar
qois Ito, president of the privy
council, and Viscount K-iizu, the
premier, indicating that preparations
are going on to meet any eventuality.
The popular feeling in Japan is
exasperated at Russia's dilatory tactics,
and the excitement has been
aggravated by the sensational press,
which is constantly circulating ru/
mors of fresh Russian aggressions.
In spite of population irritation, it
is believed that the Japanese officials
will b8 able to control the jingo element
and maintain the present peaceful
defensive attitude unless some
new and unforeseen event precipitates
fresh issues.

New Operatives at Work.
Ten additional employees were
taken in at the Cigar Factory yesterday
and twenty more will be given
employment today. Superintendent
Kerr expects to add about thirty
more duriDg the week. Mr. Kerr is
greatly pleased with the progress
that is being made. The young
women continue to improve rapidly
in the art of rolling cigars and
already some are being given higher
grade work. About $20,000 worth
of Sumatra tobacco has been ordered
to be used in the manufacture of
highclass cigars.
*Ta a week or two," said Mr.

Resort to Dynamite.
Helena, Mont., Oct. 7?The entire
state of Montana is being searched
today for a desperate band of blackmailers,
who seem bent on destroying
the Northern Pacific railroad by
means of dynamite.
The fact that the djnamiters have
succeeded in planting explosives at
two different points, and in each case
the train was partly wrecked, has
caused a feeling of great uneasiness
everywhere along the line. Extra
guards were put on at all points this
morning to protect the railroad.
Confessions of a Priest.
Rev. Jno. S. Cox, of Wake, Ark.,

Yellow Jaundice. I consulted a number
of physicians and tried all sorts
of medicines, but got no relief. Then
I began the use of Electric Bitters
and feel that I am now cured of a
disease that hud me in its grasp for
twelve years." If you want a reliable

Cause of Lockjaw.
Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused by
a bacillus or germ which exists plentifully
in street dirt. It is inactive so
long as exposed to the air, but when
carried beneath the skin as in the
wounds caused by percussion caps
or by rusty nails, and when the air
is excluded the germ is roused to
activity and produces the most virulent
poison known These germs may
, be destroyed and all danger of lockjaw
avoided by applying Chamberlain's
Pain Balm freely as soon as the
injury is received. Pain Balm is an
antiseptic and causes cuts, bruises
and like injuries to heal without maturation
and in one third the time required
by the usual treatment. It is
for sale by The Kaufmann Drug Co.

It is notable that in the despondency
