To the Grand Jury of said County
and State for the year 1903:
We, the undersigned, special committee
of your body, appointed at
the February term of Court last by
you for the purpose of investigating
the condition of the bonds of the various
county officials and dispensers
and the books kept by them, beg to
make this, our report to you:
Just previous to the last June term

obligations, their books well kept,
and their offices in a neat and clean
condition.
Just here were we wish to retqrn
thanks to the connty officials for their
hind and courteous manner extended
to 08.
We [find that tax returns in the
Auditor's office accummulate very
rapidly and have become to be in the
way, and we suggest the grand jury
as a body recommend that our representees
pass an Act, if possible, allowing
the County Auditor to destroy
these returns after they become
four years old, and the book made
up from them be taken as the original
tax returns.
We further suggest the grand jary
a3 a body recommend that the Solicitor
insist, or if he can in any way
aid us, in having the Magistrates of
\ the oountv to make return to the

County Auditor of the fines and licenses
collected by them, and that
they trun over to the County Com'
missioners of the County their books
at least every quarter for their inspection.
As to the management of the dispensary
we will say that we have ex*
amined the books kept by the County
Board of Control of this county and
find them in plain and neat conditioc,
and jind them to be all right.
We think Mr. R L. Eeisler is to be
congratulated for his mode of managing
the dispensary and its books,
as well as the other members of the
Board. "

We, the Grand Jury for Lexing torCounty,
beg leave to make the following
report:
At the last February term of Court
we appointed George D. Hayes, D.
M. Drafts, and H. L. Oswald, as our
special committee to investigate the
reliability of the various county officials,
and also the financial condition
of the various offices, etc. By their
report hereto attached tfnd a part of
this report they have performed this
duty, with the assistance of their ex
pert, T. (J. Sturkie, ana we reocmmend
T. C. Sturkie be paid 820 00
for his services as expert.
We find the county generally in a
good, peaceable and moral condition,
with the exception of some few cases
which have been brought to our attention
and which will be acted upon
by the grand jury at the coming February
term of Court, for indecent and
immoral conduct and living.
We have no special recommendations
to make just now, except that
we recommend the County Commissions
urge upon some of the overseers
of the different reads of the
county to work them and put them
in fairly good condition as soon as
possible.
We recommend that the Rspresen
of Court, we examined the bonds of
the various officials. We find some
of the officers under personal bonds,
while the others are under bonds issued
by bonding companies. After
a thorough investigation we thinkwe
are safe in saying that the bonds
of all the county officials are good
and reliable.
Just recently we have examined
the financial statuts of the various

tatives of our county pass aa Act, if
possible, allowimg the County Auditor
to destroy the tax returns after
they become four years old and that
the book made up from them be
taken as original return?, as these returns
are becoming in the way and
filling up the space of the Auditor's
office.
"We further ask that the Solicitor
assist us in requiring the Magistrates
of the county to make report to the
County Auditor of their fines and
licenses collected, and that they submit
to the County Commissioners at
least quarterly their books for inspection,
and that they submit to
the grand jury their books at least
every year for the same purpose of
being examined.
We find the county jail and the
poor house in good condition. At
the poor house we find everything in
a nice and clean way with a good
crop of corn and peas, &c., on the
plaoe, with good hogs, chickens and
other things necessary to make it a
suitable place of living.
We have passed upon ail the bills
handed us by the Solicitor with our
endorsements thereon.
We d6sire to thank the Court and
its officers for their courtesy extended
to us since we first assembled.

The Press Association has announced
that the British squadron
will be sent to the United States on
a courtesy visit in return for the
American action of sending a squadron
to Portsmouth. The home
squadron, which is commanded by
Vice Admiral Sir Arthur K. Wilson
consists of the first-class battleships
Benbow, Empress of India, Hood,
Revenge, Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign
and Nonpareil; the second-clasB battleship
Anion; eecond cruisers Edward,
Hawk, Dido, Mersy and Venue,
and several other powerful cruisers.

Thompson, who is one of President
Roosevel's patronage appointees in
Alabama, has just returned from
Oyster Bay.
He is responsible for the statement
that the President is seriously considering
the taking of trip to the
south this month. He may speak in
two or three cities each in Georgia
and Alabama. It is said that he has
been often tempted to visit the South
again, but he was afraid that nis mission
would be misunderstood by the
people, who would think the trip was
simply for vote getting.
Abscess.
W. H. Harrison, Cleveland, Miss.,
writes, Aug. 15, 1902: "I want to
say a word of praise for Ballard's
