Why Sally Ann, Sorely 'ts that dreadful man Comin' here all stark alone! No, it's father coming home. Well, I never; they ain't come; All this fass for nothin'?hum! The Powers Still Talking Peace London, September 17.?The efforts of the powers, according to the latest telegrams, are directed both at Constantinople and Sofia towards an endeavor to avert war. It is stated that all the ambassadors at Constantinople have drawn the porte's attention to the danger of permitting a continuation of the excesses in * Macedonia by the Turkish troops and irregulars. The Daily Chronicle says it understood that Great Britian has decided on a still jtronger effort / in the despatch of a British squadron in support of her diplomatic endeavors at Constantinople to put an end to the massacres. It is impossible, however, to confirm or deny the Daily Chronicle's statement Most of the special correspondents in the near east oonsider the war inevitable, bat think it may yet be delayed, neither the Bulgarians nor the Turks being prepared for it. THE SITUATION. Sofia, Bulgaria, September 16.? Although no formal replies have been received to the Bulgarian government's note it is stated that the representatives of the three great powers have repeated their instructions to Bulgaria to remain quiet, as in the event of war with Turkey, Bulgaria need not expect any help in foreign quarters. It is further re ported^that the same diplomats visited General Petroff and endeavored to persuade him to postpone the mobilization of Bulgarian forces, but the primier de clined. A telegram from Burgas reports that a general massacre is beginning throughout the district of Losengrad. A telegram from Uskub says the Mobilization of the Turkish army is proceeding rapidly, whilst dispatches from Constantinople assert that the military party is urging the Sultan to order his troops to cross the Bulgarian frontier without a declaration of war, which the party regards as unnesssary, inasmuch as I Bulgaria is a vassal State of Turkey The Sultan is said to be still hesitating. FERDINAND HOME. Sofia, Bulgaria, September 16 ? Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria arrived here todaj^from Euxinogrand. A semi official statement just issued says: "The details received here of the atrocities daily committed by Turkish soldiers pass the bounds of imagination. The general opinion is that Aaria^ople will soon be depopulated of the Christian element. Sour Stomach. Greenville, September 12 ?A fouryear-old negro girl was criminally assaulted last night in the woods adjoining Furman University campus in the heart of the city. The child is in a critical condition. Bob Gunnels, a white man, 35 years old, has been arrested charged with the crime. It is claimed that unmistakable evidence has been found which points to him as the perpetrator of the deed. mi 4- _r i V! ? i j.uroata ui jyucmng amoug wnnes and blacks were made. Gunnels has been taken to a nearby town for safekeeping, The criminal court meets Monday and the case will probably be the first one on docket. The crime is one of the most revolting in the history of Greenville county and the people were wrought up. The man under arrest probably owes Lis life to* the officers who spirited him away before the news of the crime had been made known. Just where the man is now being held is not made known. For sale by The Kaufmann Diug Co. Childroas' Day. The Childrens' Day at Harmony church last Saturday, the 12th of September, was a success. Our friends came and honored the people of Harmony. Brother Sam Shumpert gave us a good talk. Also Brother G. A. Shealy and Rev. Albert Rodgers gave the people advice and encouragement. We asked all to join in marching to the table on which was plenty for all and there was furnished plenty of lemonade. Also we appreciated the visit of all 1 3 11 1 who came anu especially ao we appreciate the visit of our three speakers. We are thankful to all and pray God's blessing on them. I believe all shook hands as good-bye to good old Brothers Barney Sbarpe, Shealy, Rodgers and Shumpert. We are in the Masters cause which we love beyond all other pleasures in the wurd. The farmer's attention is now turned towards gathering peavine hay and picking cotton. The cotton crop wi 1 be short in this neighborhood on account of the continued drought. Old corn is very good for sandy land but young corn is almost a failure. Miss Inez Brown, of Sumter, returned home some time ago after spending a few weeks very pleasantly with her friend, Miss Clyde Smith, of the Harmony section. Mrs. W. L. Outz3 is spending some time with her father. Mr. S. M. Smith, of the Harmony section. Mrs. M. M. Padgett and children spent the day a few days ago with her father, Mr. S. M. Smith, of tfce Harmony section. J. W. Younginer dined with S. B. Marsh and family on Sunday, the 6th of September. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Outzs and Mr. S. M. Smith are spending today with Mrs. M. M. Padgett, daughter of the latter. Y. September 13,1903. Abscess. W. H. Harrison, Cleveland, Miss., writes, Aug. 15, 1902: "I want to say a word of praise for Ballard's Snow Liniment. I stepped on a nail, which caused the cords in my leg to contract and an abscess to rise in my knee, and the doctor told me that I would have a stiff leg, so one day I went to J. F.
