The Lexington Dispatch Wednesday, September 23,1903. STORM SWEPT COUNTRY Several' Million Dollars Lost in a Few Minutes. President Roosevelt and Family's Narrow Escape?Loss of Property at Atlantic City is Very Great-Other Sections Visited by |tl?e Great West India Storm With More or Less Severity., New York. Sectember 16 ?With . - / f out warning, a hurricane that bad developed from the storm that had been sweeping op the Atlantic coast early in the day burst over New York at noon, spreading terror and | causing heavy damages. During the period of maximum severity, the streets were dangerous to life and limb, by reason of falling signs and falling glass. Shipping suffered greatly, many small vessels being sent to the bottom. In Harlem the residents were in a state of panic and sought refuge in cellars and basements. Two church sfceples in Brooklyn were blown over, also a steel cupola in the new Eagle building. Several persons were in jnred but none seriously. Trees across tbe tracks in many parts of the city practically stopped railway traffic. At Slepleton the entire fleet of the Staten Island Yacht Club, consisting of eighteen vessels, sank. A three masted schooner and a barkantine met in collision and are now pounding in heavy seas beyond the reach of assistance. All along the New Jersey coast tbe storm was especially severe. The seas walked over the bulkheads and piers and carried away a part of the Bloff at Long Branch. Hotels and cottages at that place were in great danger. The storm wss tbe worst experienced on the New Jersey coast in years. Tbe wind attained a velocity of sixty miles per hour. The damage in greater New York, including shipping, is over a million dollars. In New Jersey tbe damage will probably reach tbe same figures. Coney Island suffered greatly. Several smaller resorts, including Rockaway beacb, were practically wiped out, Great damage was done to telegraph and telephone wires. Trains were much delayed and ferries stopped running. ATLANTIC CITY SUFFERS. Atlantic City was the greatest sufferer, the loss there alone being more than a million dollars, houses and cottages being uprooted and pavilions washed awiy. The wind reached a velocity of seventy-five miles per hour. PRESIDENT IN DANGER. The Sylph, with President Roosevelt, wife and a party of friends en route for Ellis Island, was forced to put in at the Brookland navy yard during the height of the storm. The yacht met the hurricane off the cost 1 and was id great danger for over an ' honr. The President later proceeded to the island to inspect the immigrant station there. A Boy's Wild Bide for Life. With family around expecting him to die, and a son riding for life, 18 miles, to get Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds, W. H. Brown, of Lessville, Ind., endured death's agonies from asthma: but this wonderful medicine gave instant relief and soon cured him. He writes: "I now Bleep soundlv everv nieht." The Kaufmann Drug Co. Fertilizers and Their Cost. Fifteen or twenty years ago farm ers had very little idea about the | cost or worth of fertilizers. If they > happened to make a fair crop the fertilizer was all right; if a poor one, then the fertlizer was worthless and the purchaser refused to pay sometimes. The whole business was on a hazardous basis. Th8 agents or dealers charged such a price that they could afford to lose the payment on some of their sales and then have a margin left for profits. It iB now sold on a business basis. Farmers have been to school, and many of them are able to calculate the benefit of commercial fertilizers. The manufacturers keep them up to their guarantee, for if they fall below they cannot collect. The first thing for the farmer to do is to ascertain just what his land needs most and then apply that special plant food that is k. J? " * A. needed. He must also remember that a ton of fertilizer is worth twice as much on a field broken 8 to 12 inches deep and harrowed thoroughly, as it is on a 4-inch soil unbroken The farmer must use his brains and pencil. He must experiment in a small way. Then he can tell best what bis soil needs. He could try acid phosphate, potash and cotton seed meal alone, weighing the quantities. Thus he could combine these by twos and then mix all three and apply to a few rows. Leaving a row or two without any fertilizer he could compare results and ascertain what did best for him. That is a little trouble but it is interesting work. Doctors Could Not Help Her. 4T had kidney trouble for years," writes Mrs. Raymond Conner, of Shelton, Wash., "and the doctors could not help me. Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood. All the blood in your body passes through your kidneys once every three minutes. fThe kidneys are your blood purifiers, they filter out ihe waste cr impurities in the blood. If they are sick or out of order, they fail to do their work. Pains, aches and rheumatism come from excess of uric acid in the blood, due to neglected kidney trouble. Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady heart beats, and makes one feel as though they had heart trouble, because the heart is over-working in pumping thick, kidney poisoned blood through veins and arteries. It used to be considered that only urinary troubles v/ere to be traced to the kidneys, but now modern science proves that nearly all constitutional diseases have their beginning in kidney trouble. If you are sick you can make no mistake by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild and the extraordinary effect cf Dr. Kilmer's* Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is soon realized. It stands the highest for its wonderful cures of the most distressing cases and is sold on its merits by all druggists in fiftycent and one-dollar sizes.
