The ventilation of a bedchamber cannot be too carefolly attended to, and, as says Horace Mann "seeing the atmosphere is : forty miles deep all around the globe, it is a useless piece of economy to breathe it more than once." Do not make op beds as soon as they are vacated. Washington, September 3?For two days the State department has been without advicee from Turkey except a brief dispatch from Minister Leiahman telling of the Porte's warning to the embassies. The position of the Washington Government continues unchanged in regard to the Turkish question. It iB expected that the Brooklyn and San Francisco will arp<e off Beirut tomorrow and the Machias cff Port Said. Uj>on arrival their commanders will cable full reports about the situation. Upon the character of these advices and the expected report of Minister Leisbman will depend the programme of the State department. As there is no intention on the part of this Government to become involved in the Eastern question it is desired that the ships shall go their way as soon as their mission is fulfilled. / * Distress After Eating Cued. Constantinople, Sept. 4?The sitnation here has reached a crisis. The British, German and Italian ambassadors have gone aboard the British guard ship Imogene. The foreign legations have been warned by the Turkish government | that rebels are planning an attack on all representatives of foreign powers. The Russian and Austrian guard ships lay cff their respective embassies during the night. Constantinople, Sept. 4 ?Consul Ravendal telegraphs to Minister Irishman from Beirut that the authorities are actively seeking for Magelssen's assailant. They are unable to state if the assailant is among the persons arrested. The United States cruisers Brooklyn and San Francisco are expected to reach Beirut todav. Washington, Sept. 4 ? Minister Leischmaa today informed the state department that European powers have landed marines in Constantinople. If the lives of Americans are endrngered this government will send marines also. He is much petter and will soon be oat, bat be is very weak, and can not staud much of a strain. His physician declares that he must not go through a long campaign, so be will not go on the stump until late in October. Many of his dates will be cancelled, and outside States that have been / seeking him will be turned down in most cases. The Republican leaders greatly fear a collapse in the midst of a speech, as on several occasions last year he almost fainted while on the platform. His friends admit that Mr. Hanna is not able to stand what he could a few years ago, and he will have to take more rest Trolley Directors. Newark, N. J., Sept. 3.?Justice Gum mere, presiding in the trial of the millionaire trolley directors, charged with manslaughter in being responsible for the deaths at the Clifton avenue disaster of last Februarv. this mornincr instructed the iury tf 9 O WW to acquit all of the defendants. The justice held that the defendant direotors had done all in their power to insure the safety of patrons of the road. What is Life? Several of them wanted to buy and the others wantto rent. Wednesday night several of the party went into the county towards No. 8, and the others in other directions. They wanted, if possible, to rent and buy adjoining lands so as to be near together, forming a email colony, as it were. Turks Defeat Bulgarians. Salonica, September 3 ?Hilmi Pasha, inspector general of Macedonia, has telegraphed from Monastir that a Bulgarian band was defeated on September 1, between Klissura and Kastoria, with heavy loss. The remainder of the band is being pursued by the Turks. Another band was defeated the same day near Venezianogratsko and thirty of the insurgents were killed. Topeka, Kan., Sept. 4 ?Sarah and Gladys Hogan, daughters of a farm er, 15 miles from North Topeka, were barned to death last evening. Jackson, Ga., Sept. 4.?Jackson received her first bale of cotton yesterday. It was raised by 0. E. Smith on Mrs. Mallett's farm and sold to Pepperton Cotton mills for 18 cents. Paris, September 4.?The government has signed a decree of expulsion against a prominent ecclesiastic who recently stopped at Montreux, the charge being sedition. CJ 9 LaPatrie states on authority that the ecclesiastic referred to is Cardinal Gibbons of America. The report is regarded as incredible. Destructive Hail Storm. Richmond, Vs., Aug. 31.?A terribly destructive hail storm is reported from Amherst, Nelson, Appomattox and Charlotte counties. It swept from Albemarle southeast through the State, and leveled crops everywhere within its pathway. In Appomattox alone it destroyed a million tobacco plants. The hail stones at some points were as large as hen eggs, and crushed everything growing to the ground.
