Death of the Factory Girl.
Like a trampled flower she lay there.
In the cabin on the hill;
"Jennie's sick." said Torn, her brother
To the foreman of the milL
Tossing in her restless fever, 1
On a blanket soiled and torn,
, Lay this work wora child of sorrow,
Eight sad years since she was born.
Then her feverish fancy wakened,
And her eyes grew wide with fear,
'Mamma, harry, there's the whistre:
I'll be late if I lie here.
See that wheel above the window;

Mamma. I'm so tired of working
And I'm such a little girl.
Can't I have a dolly, mamma.
Like that one I saw one da}?
, Are there mills in heaven, too. mamma?
Won't God let me run and play?
**Sde how fast the spools are spinning!
Faster, faster! Oh. my head!
No, I oonldn't help it: no sir!
Please, I didn't break the thread!
"Oh, my finger's causht! It's "bleecing!
Stop the wheels and let me go;
Mamma, quick? The wheels will kill me
Stop it! Oh, it harts me so!"
Then the angel paused no longer,
Fanned her with his cooli"g breath.
_Towbed her tinny heart and stopped it,
8oothed her with the peace of death.

.Cleveland Popular in the West
-Savannah, Ga., September 4?Optimistio
and greatly improved in
health, Mayor Herman Myers has rem
turned to the city after a profitable
vactaion in the far west and in New
York.
The mayor likes the west much
.better than be does the east. The
money market is not tight there, and
the westerners did not even know
that there was anything wrong in the
east. He found, however, that confidence
is being restored in the east.
k . "The people in the west are1 tired
of Republican rule, however," said
Afftvnr Mvprp. in discussing the like
lihood of Cleveland's nomination "If
the Democrats will nominate a man
in whom the west has confidence?I
do not mean a western man?they
will be able to make great inroads in
the western states. Cleveland is
popular there. In fact, I think the

average business man ail over the
country will stand by the 6age of
Princeton. I do not believe the third
term talk will operate against him.
t u William Randolph Hurst is strong
in the west and in the east, too," said
the mayor. "Ia my opinion he will
figure prominently in the selection of
a man for second place on the ticket.
Hearst is almost certain to be named
for vice president unless a New York
man is selected for first Dlace. Cleve

land seems to be the strongest man
for the Democrats and if he is nominated
he will be supported by the
west. Bryan is now a b*ck number,
and those who were once his supporters
have lost confidence in him. I do
not think he is to be considered."

Race Separation.
Chicago, Sept. 3 ?John Temple
Graves of Atlanta delivered an address
on the problem of the races this
morning before a convocation of the
Chicago University. He followed
the lines of his Chautauqua address,
urging separation of the races as the
only solution, wh.jh is neither impracticable
nor impossible.
He said: ''The South is neither
cruel or unpatriotic; the North knows
it. The North is neither immovable
nor vindicative? the South knows it.
We are yet pne people, and must
meet on a plan of brotherhood and
destiny." He was greeted by an immense
audience and great enthusiasm.

i Curiosity.
A dog turns around several times
before laying down simply because
his far-away progenitors did it in
order to make a bed in the grass or
snow. In placing hi9 nose on his
paws he is doing what these Bame
progenitors did to keep their noatrils
protected. In the careful cleaning
of her fur the modern cat imitates
her remote ancestors, which were
able in this way to remove odors
likely to betray their presence to
the animals they were hunting.

More Assassinations PlannedBelgrade,
September 4 ?The officers
of the Nish and other garrisons
in Servia were arrested for demanding
a trial by coutmartial of the conspirators
concerned in the assassination
of King Alexander, Qaeen Draga
and the ministry, and threatenening
to resign if the demand were refused.
Later it was announced that the
group of officers of Nish garrison
have decided to kill all conspirators
of the palace assassinations and the
officers of other garrisons joined
them. They intended to act at an
early date, but the news leaked out
and all conspirators were arrested.
Forty-seven officers were arrested in
Nish alone.

A Good Rule.
Happy the man tha^oes not boaet
nor bluster. Oae has often to surrender
an opinion or retreat from a
position. It comes easier to the
humble man to do these tbiDgs.
Benjamin Franklin tells in his "autobiography"
that he made it a rule of
his life never to emphatically state
his disagreement with others. He
would saj: "I believe you are mistaken,"
or some work that only partially
committed him to his own statement
upon the subject. Such a rule
is far more likely to lead to pleasant
results than the dictatorial utterances
of some people. Besides it
evinces more of the genteel spirit
than is shown in the opposite method.

An Appeal for Aid.
Governor Heyward Friday morning
received a letter from A. L Gas
D
sett, of Westminister, in Oconee
county, asking for aid for the farmers,
especially the tenants, in that
section. It seems that on August
11 a destructive hail storm and
cyclone devastated a large section of
the country and Mr. Gi8S6tt states
that the tenants are in very bad circumstances.
There is nothing the
governor can do officially except give
the information out to the public, in
the hope that they might respond
Personally he contributed something
for their aid.
