The Social Glass.
[Written for the Dispatch.]
There is not a young man but who
does not look upon a drunken man
with horror and disgust, without
any desire to ever be caught in the
stupor of a drunkard. But he will
get among friends and take the social
glass with them?the first step
i.l_. _ J _ m.a ?/I m/na/Q 4/% rri/ift om
OH lUtJ uuwuwaiu lUttU tu v iv-c, Diu,
crime and everything that is mean
and degrading to mankind.
The social glass has done more toward
making drunkards than all the
confirmed drunkards in the world
could ever do. It haB caused more
misery, more woe; filled more untimely
graves with young husbands,
caused more heartaches, more vacant
chairs in the family circle, more
widows and orphans than any other
evil upon the topside of God's green
earth.
Young man, if you could only call
for that hideous mass of skeletons
from the graves of those who have
sunk into a drunkard's hell from the
social glass and listen to the wails of
t
woe and gnashing of teeth, perhaps
you could realize a part of the dam
age done by the social glass.
The man who takes his social glass j
is setting an example not only before
his own sons, but before all the boys
of his neighborhood, inviting them to
take that awful step that will degrade
them for life and cause them to fill
a drunkard's grave.
O! young man, stop and think for
awhile before you take that awful
leap; thiDk of mother; think of all
that is manly in you, and above all
think of that soul which is within
your body to live either in eternal
misery or in eternal bliss in the presence
of Almighty God, decide to
never touch the social glass.

Save The Children.
Ninety-nine of every one hundred
diseases that children have are due
to disorders of the stomach, and these
disorders are all caused by indigestion.
Kodol Dyspepsia cure is just
as good for children as it iB for adults.
Children thrive on it. It keeps
their little stomach sweet and encour
ages their growth and development.
Mrs. Henry Carter, 705 Central St.,
Nashville, Ten., says: "My little boy
is now three years old and has been
suffering from indigestion ever since
he was born. I have had the best
doctor in Nashville, but failed to do
him any good. After using one bottle
of Kodol he is a well baby. I recommend
it to all sufferers." Kodol digests
what you eat and makes the stomach
sweet. Sold by ail druggists.
Thor Items.
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
Will you please allow me space in
your colums to inform your readers
that there is such a place in this
county as Thor, and that this neighborhood
is still in a lively condition.
A much needed rain has again
come to our relief.
Crops generally are in a fine condition,
as they usually are, though
they are somewhat injured by the
drought.
It seems that some of our neighj
bors in the outskirts of other oounj
ties are envious of the prosperity and
| happiness of Lexington and are bo
hungry for some of our territory till
they have again started the new
county scheme. We would be glad
| if our neighbors across the border
would let us rest in peace by ceasing
the useless and unprofitable agitation.
When we covered that scheme
with adverse bal ots we hoped that
we had Bettled the question once for
all and that the Legislature would
erect a substantial headstone in
memory to the defeated movem6 t.
The health of these parts is good
at this time when we are not annoyed
with gnats, mosquitoes, agents
or new county agitators, but we hope
to recover from these afflictions at an
early date.
Well, as for good roads. Tell that
man from the Fork that the few little
mill men can't build roads. It is
all they can do to live. But let us
not shirk our part. We all can have
a lasting job in old Lexington building
roads.
Well, Mr. Editor, we hope to see
you in our parts soon. If this meets
your approval I may some day give
you what I think a good road lecture.
In the meantime I remain your humble
scribe, X. T. Z.
Potent Pill Pleasure.
The pills that are potent in their

calomel, blue-mass or any other pill
I ever took and at the same time it
effected me pleasantly. Little Early

The money secured by Senator
Tillman from the United States government
for the claims helped out
considerably, this being about $82,000,
and had it not been this it is not
known exactly what the state would
have done.
The need for the commission on
taxes appointed at the last Legislature
to get together and devise some
means to get the State on a cash besis
is shown when the State Treasurer
will find it necessary to borrow
$175,000 to meet the general expenses
of the State government. The
Legislature provided for the borrowing
of $300,000, if so much be necessary,
for the State government; $100,000
nf which was to be used for Den
8ion pupo868 and $200,000 for general
expenses. Only about $75,000
of the pension money was borrowed,
but as all pensions have been paid
no more can be borrowed on this account
this year. Of the general fund
of $300,000 the State Treasurer has
borrowed already $125,000, leaving a
margin of $175,000. A great deal
of thi3 money was UBed for the paying
of interest on bonds which was
payable last month and other expenses,
and the State Treasurer is

run to tbe end of December on the

obliged to borrow.

The Zing Snake'o Prowess.
The most relentless exterminator
of reptiles is a member of the family
itself?the beautiful, lithe, yellow
and black king snake, the friend of
man and the avowed enemy of anything
that creeps or crawls regardless
of size or poison fang. A native
of our own South, the king snake is
between five and eight feet long and
no thicker around than a man's
thumb. Built in every muscle and
bone for speed and tremendous constricting
power, there is not another
snake on earth that can withstand
his assault. He is immuned to the
poison of tbe cobra and of the rattler
alike, and tbe strength of a 30
foot python has no terrors for him.
Within five minutes from the opening
of the fight the king snake could
kill the biggest python that ever
lived. Ferocious as the little ;onetrictor
is toward his own kinu, toward

Hurtful to Farmers.
The proposition of the York convention
to sell the State farms and
require ali able-bodied convicts to
work the roads mav be taken as instructions
by the York delegation, as
the resolution of Mr. Ardrey and
adopted by the convention undoubtedly
reflects the sentiment in this
county. Mr. Ardrey'a statement that
a half million bales of cotton is annually
produced on convict farms in
competition with men who are forced
to be farmers, ought to show the
urgency of the adoption of therecom
mendation. If the people of the
State could be made to understand
how hurtful to the State's best interests
is the policy of growing cotton
with convict labor the system would
go with the next sitting of the legislature.?Rock
Hill Herald.
White Man LynchedAeotin,
Wash., August 5 ?William
Hamilton, a white man, and a well to
do farmer, who confessed to the murder
of Mabel Richards, was taken
from jail and lynched by a mob of a
thousand men shortly after midnight.
| The mob had been gathering all day
j yesterday, and Sheriff Richards, of
| Asotin county, father of Hamilton's
! victim, did all in his power to prevent
! the lynching. He had sworn in 25
deputies and kept them on guard at
the jail last night. Twelve or fifteen
masked men marched to the
county jail, overpowered the deputies,
took the prisoner and hanged
him to a guy wire. They left the
body hanging on the street. The
girl victim was only thirteen years
old.

Jeroms Hotel Privilege.
The directors of the State dispensary
have granted a tourists' hotel
privilege to the manager of the new
Jerome hotel, Mr. James Flannigan.
It is understood that Col. F. M.
Mixon will be the one in charge cf
the business of this hotel privilege.
He said Thursday that the application
to ths State Board had the endorsement
of every member of the
county board, of the members of the
legislative delegation and of the
members of the city council. The
hotel privilege will be something new
around these parts. There are three
or four others in the State?at North
Augusta, the Isle of Palms and one
or two other resorts.
Col. Mixon says that he will keep
the place open at night, and unless
objection is raised by the State
Board, will probably sell beer on
draught, mixed drinks, etc. This
he says 19 not m violation 01 the dispensary
law'srestrictions.
The State Board has also decided
to allow Charleston to have an additional
beer bottling establishment.
It is understood that D. H. Goble will
succeed Col. Mixon at the beer
dispensary at the Columbia hotel.
