Mill "Water Works.
Columbia Record.
Leading capitalists of Columbia
will shortly commence the construction
of a model water works system
for the mill district, the water to be
brought from Congaree, in Lexington
county, by a pipe line. The company,
which will be known as the
Manufacturers Water Works company,
is composed of Messrs. W. A.

An application will be immediately
made to the Secretary of State for a
commission, and the nominal capital
as stated will be $25,000, payable in
instalments of twenty per cent. The
contract for the pipe has been
signed with the Pittsburg Pipe Co.,
and it is understood that work will be
pushed as rapidly as possible.
The city of Columbia has had plans
for some time for a new system of
water works, the water is to be
brought from Congaree creek, and it
has been suggested that perhaps the
same mains be used for.supplying the
city. This, of course, was not stated
by the officers of the new company,
but the idea, is practicable, and may
ho /?arriA^ rmf.
A meeting of the company will be
held in a few days, and officers and
directors elected.

Pay Up Or Marry.
Iq the Argentine Republic they
have solved to their own satisfaction
the "bachelor problem*' by the simple
method of making it cost an unmarried
man as much moDey to live in
unmarried bliss as it would cost him
to marry. A man is marriageable in
Argentine when he is twenty. If
from that date and until he passes
bis twenty-eighth birthday he wishes
to remain single, he must pay So a
month to the state. For the next
five years the tax increases 100 per
cent. Between thirty-five and fifty,
the bachelor is mulcted to the tune
of 820 a month. From his fifteenth
year to seventy-five, $30 a month is
the tax, but having reached the
seventy-fifth year, the tax is reduced
to $10 a year. After eighty, a man
can remain siDgle without payiDg
anything. There is a paragraph relating
to widowers, who are given
three years in which to mourn, and
pick a successor. It is said that the
new law works like a charm.
The Z-Rays.
Recent experiments, by practical
tests and examination with the aid of
the X-Rays, establish it as a fact
that Catarrh of the Stomach is not a I
disease of itself, but that it results
from repeated attacks of indigestion.

has arrived and Mr. George Ptadcliffe,
who has charge of that part of the

look upon but that it will be juet as
good as any scenery first class companies
usually bring along with them.

An interesting experiment has been
carried on at the artillery ranges at
Steinfeld, says the Chicago Journal.
It is commonly known that a balloon
is extremely difficult to hit. A balloop
was anchored at the height of 2,500
yards, the gunners being kept in
ignorance of the range. It took
twentytwo shots to get the approximate
range, but it was not till the
sixty-fourth round the balloon was
hit, and then only slightly. However,
the small tear was sufficient to
bring it slowly to the ground.
We may know how to talk to God,
but we may not know how to let God
talk to ua. Oar conversation with
God is usually a monologue, because
we will not practice that self denial
of quieting the noisy voices of our
own proud spirits in order that we
hear God's voice speaking to us in
the stillness.

" If women would pay more attention to |
their health we would have more happy |
wives, mothers and daughters, and if they |
would observe results they would find
that the doctors' prescriptions do not
perform the many cures they are given
credit for.
" In consulting with my druggist he advised
McElrce's Wine of Cardui and Thcdford's
Black-Draught, and so I took it and
have every reason to thank him for a new
life opened up to me with restored health,
and it only took three months to cure me."
"Wine of Cardui is a regulator of the
menstrual functions and is a most astonishing
tonic for -women. It cures
scanty, suppressed, too frequent, irregular
and painful menstruation, falling
of the womb, whites and flooding. It
is helpful when approaching womanhood,
during pregnancy, after childbirth
and in change of life. It fre- |
