The Candidates With the Hoe.
Up in Lee couDty the farmers have
a most un'que organization, the pa pose
of which is to make the candidates
pay in hard labor for the support
of pledges they receive. At a
mass meeting of the farmers recently
held in that county the following remarkable
resolutions were adopted:
Resolved, That we purchase a supply
of hoes to be used by the candidates
in this camDamr : and be it

Resolved, That when a district
candidate appears on a farm we are
to require him to hoe two rounds of
400 yards eacb; and be it
Resolved, That all county candidates
be required to hoe 10 rounds
of 400 yards each; and be it further.
Resolved, That state candidates
who canvass in buggies be given a
double dose of work in the manner
above outlined.
By this method the Lee county
farmers hope to make up for the
valuable time they lose each campaign
year in talking to candidates, and if
the plan is generally adopted over
the State it will doubtless detract in

A Million for Tuskegee.
The trustees of'the Tuskegee Normal
and Industrial institute in Alabama
have received $600,000 towards
the endowment fund from Andrew
Carnege, who attended the recent
meeting in behalf of the Tuskegee
institute, where ex-President Grover
Cleveland presided. The trustees
will meet 9oon to take formal action
in accepting the gift and at the
same time to take measures to still
I further increase tbe endowment.

Study Our Railroad Lavs.
The Railroad Commission has received
a letter from the department
of history of the university at RipoD,
Wis., requesting a copy of their last
report. The letter states that . a
study of railroads of transportation
is about to be made by the department
and the South Carolina laws
have been taken as modets. Reference
is also made to the fact that
the first road in the country was
built in this State.

pastorate at Bethlehem, the resignation

Leavenswortb, had a narrow escape
recently. As he was making his trip
a tree fell across his buggy and
utterly demolished its rear part, including

Endurance and Carrying: Power the
Only Good Traits In Camelo.
As we have racers and cart horses,
so the Arabs and the natives of northeastern
Africa have breeds of camels
severally adapted for riding and for
carrying burdens. It is to the fast riding
and racing camels that the name
dromedary alone applies, so tnat tins
term?the Greek equivalent of "racer"
?indicates merely a breed and not a
particular species.
All the camels of Arabia and Africa,
as well as those employed in India, belong
to the single humped species,
which is a lightly built and long limbed
animal in comparison with its double
humped relative, the Bactrian camel of
central A9ia. Not improbably some of
the herds of the latter species which
are found in the neighborhood of the
Gobi desert are the descendants of
aboriginally wild animals, but the
Arabian camel is quite unknown in a
wild state, and we are even ignorant
of its birthplace, although it is quite
likely that this may have been north
Africa or the neighborhood of the Arabian
desert. For traversing desert
tracts camels are absolutely indispensable.
Their broad cushionlike hoofs
proclaim them essentially animals of
the desert, and a camel is absolutely
helpless on a wet and slippery inclined
road.
As if conscious that man cannot do
without them, camels are some of the
worst tempered and ill natured brutes
In creation, and, save for their endurance
and the heavy loads they can
carry, no one has a good word to say
in their favor. If a camel can bite a
I mounted traveler whom he may be
passing in a narrow road, lie will never
fail to avail himself of the opportunity,
and the bubbling noise made by a
"mast" camel at night will destroy the
