C J K?Uey, son of James D. and Elizabeth Kelley, was bom March 8, 1841 and died March 12, 1903. He leaves 6 children, 4 grand children and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. His wife and 2 children preceded him to the spirit land. He was a member of the Baptist church. His body was laid to rest in the family burying ground. J. E. Steele. Fine Watermelon Seed. The Board is composed of W. S. Hite, of Batesburg; James B. Addy, of Lattakoo and S. H. EarmaD, of Lexington, and will be in session next Monday. Srookl&nd Guards. The Brookland Guards which was recently organized at New Brookland will meet tonight to perfect the organization. Adjt. Gen. Frost is expected over from Columbia to address ti. * meeting and encourage the boys with his presence. At a previous meeting K. L. Shuler wa9 elected Captain; J. A. Gaydon, Lieutenant; Joe Davis, First Lieutenant. This is not the first military company organized in this county as has been erroneously stated, as the Lex'ngton Rifles, of which C. B. Harman was the Captain, was organized in this place in 1890 and maintained its organization for some time. Also the Peak Guards, commanded by Capt. Eargle, and which enlisted for the Darlington riot. "Camp Harman." Notice is hereby given that a meeting of Camp Harman, Sons of Veterans will meet at Lexington, S. C., April 6tb, (first Monday; at 11 o'clock. This meetiDg is called for the purpose of perfecting an organization of this camp, commenced August 13, of last year, and it is earnestly desired that fell members will attend and bring with them all sons of veterans desirous of joining such an organization. For the 1903 Reunion of the Con federate Veterans, the Seaboard Air Line will sell from its coupon ticket 8 ations round trip tickets to New Orleans at the very low rate of one - j i i ceot per mile tor distance traveled short line mileage; the tickets will be sold from May 16 th to 21st inclusive, good for return until May 21th. By depositing the tickets with the special agent at New Orleans not later than May 24tb, and upon payment of 50. cents fee, the return t I limit of the tickets may be extended | until June 15th. This remarkably low rate to the Crescent City of the South West will no doubt be taken advantage of by a large number of people as the rates are open ones and the tickets can be used not only by the Confederate Veterans, but by the public at large. Supreme Court Decisions. The Supreme Court has affirmed I the judgment of the Circuit Court i here, which granted a non suit, in the case of Killian Harman against the Western Union Telegraph Co This case was brought by Messrs. Muller & Sturkie, asking damages for the failure of the Company to deliver an important telegram to Mr. Harman at Batesburg, about two years ago. Upon the call of the case for trial and after the close of the plaintiffs testimony, the presiding j Judge granted a ncn suit, and this has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. Strother, asking judgment of $100 00 for each and every day of the continuance of the operation of the Carolina Midland I Railroad by the defendant company from Batesburg to Blackville, which is alleged to be a competing line, and contrary to an act of the General Assembly, dated 2nd March, 1897. Judge Townsend filed his decision i on October 1st, 1900, sustaining the | demurrer cf the defendant and dis| missing the complaint. The case ' was carried up, and a decision by the Supreme Court, reversing the judgment of the Circuit Court, was handed down last week. This, we understand, puts the case before a jury and a hard and lengthy trial may be expected. -? ? The President this week started on his electioneering tour.
