The show man has struck Lewiedale and now come and see the snakes. He has one large enough to swallow the whole town, or at least, most all have been in. Quite an excitement was caused by a mad dog Wednesday. He bit a good many dogs in the town and is still at large. . There was a light frost hereabouts last Thursday morning, but don't think the fruit is damaged very much. Wheat is being damaged in our section by insects. Messrs. Hallman and Miller, not to be out done, have taken down their pole and put up sixty-one gourds. Now who can beat that ? The health of our town is so comr plete that the doctor is looking a little blue and the coffin man has most gone out of business. Some few of the children have whooping caugh. Mr. Ben Kjzer who has been real sick is able to be up and out again. Mr. Jacob S Kyzer has been visiting his son George at New Brookland bnt is now home again. There wiil be memorial services at Oak Grove church, the 2nd Sunday in April. Everybody invited. I don't see how it is the North professes so much love for the negro and still when an K F. D. route is laid out they will not take his name as a patron of the route. Our tobacco men are busy puttiDg up their coring houses and figuring r' out the net profits. Mr. Cooper, our former agent here, called to see us ? last Sunday. He still looks as bright as "Day". The latest definition of dancing: "Hug; ing set to music." Lowell, March 25 ?The latest developments of the wage disagreement between the textile workers and mill operatore indicate that a strike will be called on Monday next. The strike will affect 18,000 cotton operatives and tie up seven large mills by this order. Lawrence and other towns in Massachusetts have also decided to back their demands by quitting work. For the above occasion the Seaboard Air Line and connections will sell ex- j cursion tickets to Savannah, Ga., from May 4th to 7fch. inclusive, at rate of one fare plus 25 cents for the round trip, the final limit of tickets will be May 30ih. By depositing return coupons of the tickets with the Special Agent in Savannah not later than May 20th, and upon payment of 50 cents fee, an extension of the final limit of tickets may be obtained until June 1, 1903. These rates are open to the public and offer a low rate to Savannah with a long return limit at a season of the year when the various seashore resorts around Savannah are open. Does every one know in what notable physical particulars the Eskimos who live in the far nort h differs from us temperate zone people? It will be remembered that half a dozen or more Eskimos came to New York from the arctic zone with one of Lieutenant Pearys homiDg parties. Most of them died presently of pneumonia, to the distress and somewhat to the indignation of the public. Of several of them careful autopsies were made and, not a little to the excitement of our medical world, it was discovered that the Eskimo intestine was about four feet shorter than ours is, and that his liver is not shaped like what we have been used to call a human liver, but was more like that of a dog. The Eskimo, apparently, is constructed so that he can live and thrive under such conditions and on SUCH a diet as tie cau wmujauu ut home. 2To Longer Betels. Greenwood News and Views. The war department will compile and publish a complete roster of the officers and enlisted men of the Uoion and Confederate armies. This project which puts on record the names of Northern and Southern soldiers with like distinction is the work of Secretary Root of the war department and was authorized by act of congress passed in February. In this | compilation the name of ''rebel" will no longer be known. There will be some difficulty in making the Confederate part of the roster complete and Secretary Root has written to the Governors of States which furnished troops for the Confederate armies to cooperate with him in making the compilation as nearly complete as it is possible to make it The Secretary of War deserves the commendation of the whole country, and especially of the South, for the interest he has taken in this work. These carriers are paid by checks issued by Postmaster Ensor against funds on deposit in the Carolina National Bank, the national depository in .Columbia. Some idea of the magnitude to which this service ba9 grown in this State can be obtained from the statement that the monthly pay roll of these carriers amounts to over $11,000. Rules for the Sick Room. Here are a few rules for the sick room, taken from one of our exchanges, that are worth remembering: Never allow the patient to take the temperature himself. Many patients are more knowing than nurses when there is a questiou of temperature. Never put a hot water bottle next to the skin.
