A Tourist Sotel.
We learn that a movement is
assuming shape by the people of
Leesville and Bateeburg, backed by
some Northern capitalists, to build a
large tourist hotel on an eligible site
between the two towns. The hotel
will be on an extensive plan having
drives, race course, polo and other i

A Deserved Promotion.
Mr. D. R. George came over from
Columbia last Sunday en a visit to
the maternal home. He was looking
fine and seemed to be happy over his
promotion to chief engineer of the
Oiympia mil), but he wears his added
honors with becoming dignity.
Womanlike.
The woman who drove through a
bowling mob of strikers at Kansas
City, lashing them with her whip,
fainted on reaching her destination
when she found that her hat was not
on straight. A woman can face a
cannon's mouth without a quiver of
her muscles, but an awry hat brings
her down every time.

Luigi Shows To-Night.
The Luigi Family Shows which
should have exhibited in Lexington
on Monday night, but owing to the
wretched condition of the roads got
in too late and did not show thereby
disappointing a big crowd, pulled
over to Red Bank yesterday and
showed there last night to a packed
teDt and returned here today and
will exhibit here to-night. People
who witnessed the performance at Red
Bank are loud in their praises and
those attending to-night may look for
a good show.

Rev. L. E. Busby Dead.
The many friends hereabouts of
Dr. L. E. Rusby will regret to learn
of his death. Dr. Dusby was a
prominent Lutheran divine and a
well known educator. He it was
who was first to lead the movement
which culminated in making LeeBville
the educational centre of western
Carolina.

If the merchants of the town
would only let the country people
know what they have to sell through
the columns of the Dispatch they
would experience a healthy increase

Jobbing1 House.
The attention of the country merchant
is particularly directed to the
change in the business of the Bee
Hive, 1554 Main street, Columbia.
Hereafter careful attention will be
given not only to the retail department,
but also to the jobbing trade.
This is a branch house of Frank's
Jobbing House in New York and
having a representative in this leading
market with ample cash to take
advantage of the cream of bargains,
the Columbia house is prepared to
offer unprecedented bargains in
clothing, hats and gent's furnishing
to the country merchants. A large
full stock is always on hand from
which to make a selection and they
can save money by placing their
orders with this house. The retail
trade is replete with the most fashionable
clothing, hats and gent's
furnishings and the latest novelties in
men's and boy's neckware. Any size
person from the leanest to the stoutest;
the smallest to the tallest can be
fitted at a small cost. Give this
house a trial.

Notes from Johnston.
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
The health in this community is
| very good at present.
Some farmers have planted com in
sand lands, but those in the clay
have nob done much plowing. The
small grain is looking very fine at
present and if seasons continue a
large crop will be gathered in these
parts.
Three cases of smallpox have been
reported in Johnston, consequently
the towns of Edgefield and Wards
bave strict quarantine regulations.
The depot at Edgefield was burned
last night. It is not known weather
it was struck by lightning, during
the thunderstorm or set on fire by an
incendiary. Y.
One of Roosevelt's Pets.
LaBt Friday a nicely dressed mulatto,
going under the name W. S.
Walker, made his appearance upon
our streets claiming to represent an
insurance company of Williamsport,
Pa. He solicited insurance amoDg
the negroes and succeeded in writing
j several policies, the premium of
j which be always demanded in ad1
vaDce. Late that night Htnry Mims,
of Lewiedale, came down and had a
warrant taken out charging Walker
WILLI ixauuuicuu .
Walker was found at the home of
James Lowman, a worthy colored
man. While the town watchman wis
waiting for him to come out of h s
room, Walker, in his night-clothes,
jumped out of the window and attempted
to escape to a near by
swamp. He was overtaken, however, |
and confined in jail. He was given I
a preliminary hearing before Magistrate
Meetze, and held for trial in default
of bond. It is said that he is
wanted in Georgia for similar offen sas.
He was carried off on the train t)
