WWBBBWWM??BBm Tne Lexington Dispatcl] Wednesday, March 18,1903. Newberry College. To the Editor of the Dispatch: As we weekly peruse the contents of the dear old Dispatch and have not as yet, noticed any notes from oar college, we thought perhaps a few items would be of interest to it6 readers. Notwithstanding the fact of the absence of Dr. Cromer, whose peers are few among the educators of our land* canvassing the field in the interest of the new buildiDg, Vork is moving on very nicely with Prof. Siigh acting president, and Rev. W. L Seabrook, as lecturer in Dr. Cromer's recitation room. We are proud to note that Lexington is better represented up here than any other county in the State except Newberry itself, there being about twenty boys here from Lexington county, seventeen of whom are from the Dutch Fork. We believe the people on the south side ot the river take as much interest in eciuca a tion as those of the Fork, but we want them to get interested in Newberry College. We don't as!, this of them because we think she has no equal, bat we do claim that she has no superior in this fair south land of ours. Then, why not send your boys to Newberry College, where their training will be as thourough as elsewhere? She is the only Lutheran college in the State, and the nearest .denominational college to Lexington county. Newberry College has done excellent work in the past, but with the prospects of a new building that will contain larger recitation rooms than we already have, and of a gymnasium, both of which we believe will be erected by the opening of the next session, we are lead to think that her VtAaf. wni*k liea in thfi fntnm. We extend through the colulmnB of the Dispatch, a hearty invitation to the Editor and its readers to attend the Anniversary Celebration of the Literary Societies which will take place March 20th. In this celebration two of Lexington's boys will > take part: Mr. H. H. Haitiwanger, as one of the orators and Mr. L. M. Bouknight, first affirmative speaker in the debate. Both of these are members of the Phrenakosmian Society. Although base ball does not interfere with the regular work of the college, we are glad "that the boys take interest enough in it, that we are not behinc^ even in athletics. xtme games on -.the borne grounds have already been scheduled for the coming seas ^u. Mr. J. M. Shealy, of the Senior class, has recently been * called to L:ttle Mountain, to the bedside of his sick mother who is at the point of death. We hope Mrs. Shealy may pass from the shadows of death and be restored to her usual health, and that Mr. Shealy will be able to return to his studies at an early day. Mr. 1). S. Haltiwanger, of the senior class, is spending a few days under the parental roof at Ballentine. Prof. Setzler is having a dwelling ; erected on a lot adjoining the campus. Success to the Dispatch and its readers is the wish of D. Dangers of Pneumonia.. A cold at this time if neglected is liable to cause pneumonia which is so often fatal, and even when the patient has recovered the longs are weakened, making them peculiarly susceptible to the development of consumption. Foley'<3 Honey and Tar will stop the cough, heal and strengthen the lungs and prevent pneumonia. Sold by The Kaufmann Drug Co. Locals from Adair. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Health in this community is very good at present. Some of our farmers are Btili sowing spring oats. Mr. J. J. Long has recently purchased a shiLgle machine. Misses Anna and Eugenia Frick have recently been visiting Miss Corrie Warner and others. They will return to their home in Richland county in the near future. Mr. William Addy is still our famous mail rider, carrying the mail and the female. Mr N W Hyler is very low at this writing but we hope to see him out again soon. Rev. Y Yon A. Riser preached his farewell sermon at Mt. Pleasant last Sunday. He leaves for the rich valley of the mountainous State of Virginia. Messrs. M. L and P. B. Warner and F. W. Derrick all went to Columbia today on business. Mr. R A. Barre and family visited Mr. M. L. Warner's, Sunday. Messrs. W. D Harmon and L. E. Black from Sivilla section made a fiyiDg trip to Lexington Saturday and Sunday. Mr. R A. Barre is doiDg a thriving business with his shingle machine. There was a very large crowd attended Bulah services Sunday. We were sorry to learn that Mr. A. W. Shealy had another 6ervere attack of neuralgia last week. With much success to the deaj old Dispatch and its many readers. Adair, S. C., C. and C. March 2, 1903. Caution! This is not a gentle word?but when you think how liable you are not to purchase the only remedy universally known and a remedy that has had the largest sale of any medicine in the world since 1868 for cure onH treatment nf ConsumDtion and Throat and Lung troubles without losiDg its great popularity all these years, ycu will be thankful we called your attention to Boschee 8 German Syrup. There are so many ordinary cough remedies made by druggists and others that are cheap and good for light colds perhaps, but for severe Coughs, Bronchitis, Croup?and especially for Consumption, where there is difficult expectoration and coughing the nights and mornings, there is nothing like German Syrup. The 25 cents size has just been introduced this year. Regular size 75 cents. At all druggists. Protector of Little Coons. ' . Father?I read of a terrible thing today that eccurred up in West Yivginia. Three black bears came suddenly out of the woods upon some CDildren at play, and the children, in their fright, ran home and left their little 2 year-old sister, and before the parents could come to the rescue the bearshad literally torn the child's head from its body and were devouring it. Madrid, SpaiD, March 11.?The Spanish government, after having let the war with America rest foi nearly four years, is going to open up the discussion again and promises some startling developments. Despite the fact that the United States government had a court of inquiry sit for weeks over the remains of the battleship Maine, at which it was determined a mine in the channel was the cause of her destruction, some of the Spanish subjects have held tenaciously to the belief that the Spaniards were not responsible for the wrecking of the battleship. Foreign Minister Abarzuza has an nounced his intention of proposing at the next meeting of the cabinetcouncil that the Spanish government make an investigation for themselves in order to satisfy the Spanisn sub j?cts. It is bis idea to have the wreck of the Maine refloated in Havana harbor and all of the parts of the battleship thoroughly gone over by Spanish experts in order to determine what was really the cause of her sinking. Tragedy Averted. "Justin the nick of time our little boy was saved" writes Mrs. W. Watkins, of Pleasant City, Ohio. "Pneumonia had played sad havoc with him and a terrible cough set in besides.
