The Legislature.
The General Assembly is still
wrestling with the great problems of
civil government. and be it said to
the credit of the members, more and
closer attention is given to each and
every measure as they are taken from j
the calendar than heretofore, the
result of which will undoubtedly be
the passage of more wholesome laws
and the rejection of a larger number
of bad ones.
Among the most important bills
which has received the favorable consideration
of the House was the bill
to create the office of Chief Constable,
whose duty it is to supervise the
Dispensary Constables, and carries
a salary of $1,500 a year. The bill
provides for the appointment of the
Chief Constable by the Governor.
i1 CJl i*
Lrnring me progress or rue discussion
of this bill, Hod. John Bell
Towill made a timely and strong
point when he insisted that it was
high time for the Governor to stop
being a clerk to the constabulary
force, and we are of the same opinion.
The appropriation and supply bills
passed in the ssme shape that they
came from the committees, with the
exception of the appropriation for
?acBMsnaam i mvwm IBBI ? nu i "win liraaBPB

Winthrop, which has been reduced,
but the Senate will probably restore
the appropriation as it originally
stood.
The bill to require all Superintendents
of Edncation to hold first grade
'teachers' certificates met its death in
the Senate, at did also the bill to distribute
dispensary profits to the
weak schools.
The House rejected Mr, Haskills
bill to provide for repairs to tbeState
house.
The compulsory education bill has 1
been killed
The bill providing for a tax of 50
cents on each dog in the State has
received its third reading in the
House.
Many bills were warmly debated
before they were finally disposed of
by the bouse in which they were
considered.
The Governor has affixed his signature
to the child labor bill and it
is now a law of the State.

War Rumor Not Confirmed.
Panama, February 12.?No confirmation
has been received here regarding
the reported declaration of
war by Guatemala against Salvador
and Honduras. It is well kpown that
Guatemala openly sympathizes with
the President-elect of Honduras,
Senor Bonilla, but it is believed that
present critical situation in Guatemala
will not allow the government
to render Senor Bonilla any substantial
aid. Salvador and Nicaragua are
protecting their respective countries.
War preparations are reported to be
proceeding in Guatemala, where a
strict censorship has been established
over the outgoing cablegrams.
The
Easy Pill.
DeWitt's Little Early Risers do
not gripe nor weaken the system.
They cure biliousness, jaundice, constipation
and inaclive livers, by
arousing the secretions, moving the
bowels gently, yet effectually, and
giving such tone and strength to the
glands of the stomach, liver and
bowels that the cause of the trouble
is removed entirely. These famous
little pills exert a decided tonic effect
I upon the organs involved, and if i
I their use is continued for a few dayB
! there will be no return of the trouble.

Will Not Meet Cleveland.
Terre Haute, Indiana, Feb. 15 ?
W. J. Bryan said here today that he
did not know how the report started
that he had refused to dine with the
Ircquois club of Chicago if Mr.
Cleveland is invited, but when asked
if the report was true he said: "I do
not care to say."
Mr. Bryan is filling a few lecture
engagements in Indiana, after
which he will go to New York. Then
he will return to Lincoln, where, he
says, he is to serve as a juror at the
present term of the local court.
