The ground hog came out Monday
and failing to see his shadow did not

The town election will soon be
here and the books of registration
have not yet been opened. The law
requires that it shall be opened 90
days previous to the day of election.
The children of the Institute will
no doubt be pleased to learn that
they will have holiday on February

at the calendar and see the reason

The day of judgment is rapidly
approaching and Treasurer Snealy is

inviting delinquent taxpayers to flee
to him and be saved from the execution
in the hands of the Sheriff.
Dr. Gilmore, the well known and
popular dental surgeon with headquarters
in Columbia, will be at
Drafts Hotel next Tuesday and
Wednesday. Those wishing dental
work of any kind are advised to
consult the Doctor.

Where Cobras Are Held to Be Sacred.
The Hindoos on account of their superstition
are very loath to destroy a
cobra. It appears prominently in their
mythology, and it is venerated both as
a symbol of a- malicious and destructive
power and also a beueficent one.
According to Mr. A. K. Forbes, cobras
are looked upon as guardian angels,
and there is a Bengalese tradition that
a male infant auspiciously shaded by a
cobra will come to the throne.

Some persons are of the opinion that
the first writing' was upon thin pieces
of wood. From their convenience this
seems probable. Such boards wore used
at an early period by the ' ?'recks and
Rome us, and wore frequently covered
wiili wax. which was of course more
easily written upon than the bare
wood. Where wax was used errors were
readily erased by rubbing with the
blunt end of the piece of metal which
served for a pen. To make the writing
more visible it appears that some black
substance was smeared over the surface
of the white wax and remained in
the scratched marks.
