Willemsted, December 24?(By
boat from La Guayra)?President
Castro has gone to La Victoria to
check the advance of revolutionists,
The ten days armistice signed by the
rebels, ends today, and Matos' forces
have started to march on Caracas by
three roads. The revolutionists have
received fresh supplies of ammunition
from Tulcatus. Castro's situation
is desperate. Maios leaves here
in a few days to assume command in
the attack on Caracas and says when
Castro is driven from power he will
pay the demand of the allies.
La Guayra, December 24?The
Bed D line steamer Caracas was
forced by the biockaders to put to
sea last-night before she finished unloading.
Trie mails from America
were sent ashore this morning It
is stated that the steamer will not be
permitted to land her cargo at Puerto
Cabellc. Commercial men and mem
bers of the American colony think
this action of the British and Germans
very harsh.
What's In a Name?
Everything is in the name when
it comes to Witch Hazel Salve. E.
C. DeWitt & Co., of Chicago, discovered,
some years ago, how to
make a salve from Witch Hazel that
is a SDecific for Piles. For Blind,
*>
bleeding, itching and protruding
piles, eczema, cuts, burns, bruises
and all skin diseases DeWitt's Salve
has no equal. This has given rise to
numerous worthless counterfeits. Ask

Drank Acid.
Denver, Col., Dec. 26?Mr. and
Mrs. John Singer are dead as a result,
it is thought, of accidental
poisoning. The physician believes
the couple took oxalic acid, mistaking
it for salts. Before he reached them
Singer died and Mrs. Singer was in
convulsions and died while the physician
was trying to relieve her sufferings,
but she revived long enough
however, to say the single word
"salts," in response to the doctor's
questioning as to what she had taken.
Quick Courtship.
A young servant girl asked leave
to attend a friend's funeral. Her
mistress put herself to some inconvenience
to allow her to go. On her
return, much to the lady's surprise,
she gave a month's notice, and when
asked the reas on for so doing replied
"Well, ma'am, to tell the real
truth, the corpse's husband said I
was the life and soul of the whole
party, and I'm engaged to be married
to him."
Their China Wedding.

celebration of their China wedding.
A number of invitations have been
issued and a pleasant evening is an
ticipated by those attending. Mr.

Negroes Needed in Hawaii.
Honolulu, Dec. 18, via San Francisco,
Dec. 24?Thomas Fortune,
special labor commissioner appointed
by Secretary Shaw to visit the Philippines
and Hawaiian Islands is here.
In an interview in Tne Star he said:
4T believe the importation of negroes
here forms a natural solution of the
difficulty which unavoidably follows
the absorption of tropical or semitropical
countries by the United
States. In the Southern States and
in the Carolinas the negro made the
industries what the are."
The commissioner said there might
be difficulty in obtaining the negro,
but he thought that the planters
could get all they wanted if they
sent the right sort of agents after
them.
"You could get 10,000 here in six
mouths," he said. In view of the
news from Washington that the senate
gave a hostile reception to the
j plan for allowing Chinese to enter
Hawaii as laborers, ihe views of
Commissioner Fortune have attracted
much attention here, as Hawaii is in
need of more labor.

Press.

England, with complete success.
Inauguratory messages, including
one from the governor general of
Canada to King Edward VII, have

Treated Like Dogs.
Kingston, Dec. 26.?The British
steamer Topaz has just arrived here
with details of the assaults made on
German and English subjects by Venezuelans
following the seizure of th6
Venezuelan fleet and subsequent
events. Captain George Davison
says he and his men were kept in a
cell of a dirty jail for two days and
was freed only by the American
consul. The cr6W were treated like

To improve the appetite and

Liver Tablets. Mr. J. H. Seitz, of

pleasant and satisfactory movement
of the bowels." There are people in
this community who need just such a

A singular suit in Chicago is for
the possession of a lizard which the
complainant values at $200. This
lizard had been in the man's stomach
for ten years, but was coughed
up last week. The lizard crawled
off and was captured by another man
who refused to surrender it, hence
the suit.

very superior, but instead c? getting
better I grew weaker every day. My husband
