Notes and Comments.
The annual meeting of the State
Bar Association will be held in Columbia
on Thursday, January 15
There will be a banquet in the evening.
Things have ccme to a pretty pass
when a second or third cla3a nation
like Italy can fearlessly pluck the
feathers out the great American Eagle
and insult the Stars and Stripes with
_ _. _
impunity.
Adam Lawman, the negro desperado
who attempted to assassinate Mr.
Tfeomes Davis and Constable Thornton
last week at Killian, in Richland
county, a week before Christmas,
has been caught and safely lodged
behind the iron bars. The capture
was made, says, the Columbia Eve*
ning Record, by Mr. Fred Harman,
And Mr. George W. Taylor.
Some thoughtless person, for we
cannot believe that any one conld be
found in Lexington county who
weald do each a reprehensible act
HMiicioasly, exploded a dynamite cartridge
in the principal street of
JBrockland on Christmas eve and
seventy-five feet of glaBs was broken
in the stores in the vicinity. Dirt
and small roeks were thrown hun3reds
of feet in every direction, bet
fortnnately not one was hart.
The Metbcdists of America have
succeeded in raising $20,000,000 as
a thanksgiving offering and to be
known as the Twentieth Century
Thanks offering. This princely sum
wiil be nsed to pay chorch debts,
imild hospitals and carrying on various
other charity work of the Church.
$8,000,000 of this amount will be
devoted to educational work. An
unknown man contributed one million
dollars toward this amount.
The Christmas casualities this
year are remarkable for their infreiifldnAV

our exchanges. Another remarkable
thing connected with this Christmas
tide was the fact that while a large
amount of booze was sold both by
the dispensary and through order
houses, the absence of any considerable
amount of drunkenness was a
noticeable and pleasing feature of the
festivities.
nk?arconit the noted electrician, has
given to the world in his system of
wireless telegraphy the marvel of the
age. His success in this 'direction
his opened up to the student of the
sciences a vast field of possibilities
almost limitless in their scope and
tremendeous magnitude for exploration
and investigations will no doubt
be carried on with renewed activity,
ana some startling revelations may
be reasonably expected in the future.
Great Britian, Germany and Italy
bave got Uncle Sam by the gotee and
-are puliing it for all it is worth, that
-is the three great powers have the
United States in a whole and "Teddy,
the Bough Eider," doesn't know bow
to get out. This powerful government
will either have to fight the
ihree nations or completely abandon
the Monroe doctrine, one of the
time honored principles of Demc-cracy.
The great question now confronting
the American people, and
one that is of absorbing interest to
the whole civilized world, is "Shall
Boosevelt act as arbitrator, or shall he
not?" Ind upon his decison hangs in {
a large measure the destiny of nations.

Golden Medical
Discovery cures diseases of the stomach
and other organs of digestion and nutrition.
It purifies the blood and enables
the perfect nutrition of the body which
means perfect health.
"For six long years I suffered with indigestion
and my liver and kidneys, which baffled the
best doctors in our country," writes E. I*. Ransell,
Esq.. of Woolsev, Prince William Co.. Va.
"I suffered with my stomach and back for a long
time, and after taking a ' cart-load' of medicine
from three doctors I grew so bad I could hardly
do a day's work. Would have death-like pains
in the side, and blind spells. I began taking
Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and
'Pleasant Pellets.' Before I had taken half of
the second bottle I began to feel relieved. I got
six more bottles and used them, and am happy
to say I owe my life to Dr. Pierce."
Accept no substitute for " Golden Medical
Discovery." There is nothing "'just
as good" for diseases of the stomach,
blood and lungs.

The Venezuelan Arbitration.
London, December 27?The press
today is almost unanimous in expressing
regret over Roosevelt's refusal
to act as arbitrator in Venezuelan
affairs, believing that the award
by him would have commanded universal
respect. Tbey say there has
been down right fe*r that the procedure
at the Hagu9 will be dilatory,
and as its award will lack guarantees,
it will not be surprising if Venezuela
repudiated its decision. The general
belief is that Roosevelt is not obeying
the whispers of uneasy politicians
in refusing, but the dictates of bis
own judgment on a mature view of
the facts and the feelings of his people.
Raris, December 27.?A. Caracas
M I
dispatch received here today says the
agreement to submit the German,
English and Italian claims to The
Hague tribunal is satisfactory to
Castro.
Berlin, December 27.?Germany is
disappointed at Boosevelt's declination
to arbitrate the Yenezuelan
troubles, but will refer to The Hague.
Baron von Bichthofen received Hay's
note this morning.

- Question Answered.
Yes, August Flower still has the
largest sale of any medicine in the
civilized world. Your mothers' and
grandmothers'never thought of using
anything else for Indigestion or Biliousness.
Doctors were scarce, and
they seldom heard of Appendicitis,
Nervous Prostration or Heart failure,
etc. They used August Flower to
clean out the system and stop fermentation
of undigested food, regulate
the action of the liver, stimulate
the nervous and organic action of
the system, and that is all they took
when feeling dull and bad with head
aches and other aches. You only
need a few doses of Green's August
Flower, in liquid form, to make you
satisfied there is nothing serious the
matter with you. You can get this
reliable remedy at Kaufmann's Drug
Store.

Franchise "Withheld.
Council Proposes Action as to Lexington-Columbia
Line.
Columbia Afternoon Record, Dec. 2?.
The matter of granting a franchise
to the Lexington Columbia line was
postponed last night to the nextmeeting
of council. The committee
reported favorably on the proposition,
but gave the company right of way
on more streets than originally asked
for. It also inserted a provision that
the bridge should have a roadway
and that it should be free. Alderman
Baker asked for a continuance
because be wanted to look more info
it, especially in the matter cf a free
bridge. Alderman Melton also
wanted further time, but Alderman
Nelson thought action should be
taken. The whole matter was postponed.
A Timely Suggestion.
This is the season of the year
when the prudent and careful housewife
replenishes her supply of Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy. It is certain
to be Deeded before the winter
is over, and results are much more
prompt and satisfactory when it is
kept at hand and given as soon as
the cold is contracted and before it
has become settled in the system
In almost every instance a eevere
old may be warded off by takiDg
this remedy freely as soon as the first
indication of the cold appears.
There is no danger in giving it to
children for it contains no harmful
substance. It is pleasant to take?

most people suppose.

Often Disagree With Us
Because we overeat of them. Indigestion
follows. But there's a way to
escape such consequences. A dose of a
good digestant like Kodol will relive you
at once. Your stomach is simply too
weak to digest what you eat. That's all
indigestion is. Kodol digests the food
without the stomach's aid. Thus the
stomach rests while the body is strengthened
by wholesome food. Dieting is unnecessary.
Kodol digests any kind of
