Busy Brooklaad.
The Columbia Afternoon Record, 6th inst.
A. D. Shull went to Lexington today
on business connected with the
Columbia and Lexington Street railway.
The repainting of the mill village
houses will be begun at once. Many
of these houses have pretty dower
yards, which speaks well for the mill
operatives.
C. W. Swygert, a former resident
ofBrookland, recently had his leg
broken at Sandersville, Ga. He is
now in a sanitarium and is improving.
The principal of the Brookland
school, who has been ill for the past
two weeks, is convalescing. Rev. Mr.
Harrell is acceptably filling the
vacancy caused by Prof. Wilson's
illness. The total enrollment of the
two schools here is upwards of 250.
Superintendent Dreher, of tbe Columbia
graded schools, in company
with several teachers and about thirty
of his pupils, visited Crystal lake
yesterday. They were delighted with
their trip. Crystal lake covers an
area of nineteen acres and isN located
on Brooklood heights. It derives its
name from the clearness of its water.

As an evidence of Brookland's steady
growth, half a dozen residences are
in course of construction.
0. N. Denham, former manager of
the beaming and warping department
of the Columbia Mills company, has
gone into the mercantile business in
Brookland. He is located on State
street.
The planing mill of B L Shuler is
being operated to its fail" capacity.
He is filling orders from Columbia
and other points.

Golden Streets.
For some time past the authorities
of Altman in the Cripple Creek district,
vrhich enjoys the distinction of
being the highest incorporated town
in the world have been paving the
streets with rock taken from the
waste dump of the Pharmacist mine.
Some of it looked so well that samples
were taken at random and
assayed, and the returns showed an
average value of $20 in gold a ton.
As a result men began hauling
away the street surface until stopped
by the police. The Pharmacist company
has ceased giviDg away the
dump, and is hauling it to the reduction
mills.

today that the anti-polygamists
are organizing to prevent the
seating of Apostle Used Smoot in the
United States senate should he be
elected. Smoot has announced himself
in the fight to stay and that
threats by the opposition cannot
frighten him into withdrawal.

DEER IN THE WOODS.
Their Appearance Deceive* All but
the Old Hunter.
Next to the difficulty of comprehending
the wonderful senses of the deer is
that of understanding how one looks in
the woods. Your ideas are 1. :Cessorily
taken from pictures or from stuffed
deer or tame ones in a park. You are
almost certain to be looking for a deer,
whereas you might better be looking
for anything else. In the woods you
seldom see half of a deer and generally
much less, often only a part of the
shoulder, or only an ear over a log or a
leg .Jer it, a bit of rump projecting
from a bush or a head and bit of the
neck reaching up for leaves. The arcade
of maple lit up by the scarlet of
the ginseng and bush cranberry, the
little arbor where the wild hop is yellowing
over the thorn apples on which
half a dozen ruffed grouse are taking
their breakfast the edge of the pool
where the trout flashes through the
water over which the chelone is still
nodding, or the darksome glade where
the golden petals of the witch hazel
are closing the floral march of the year
would all make lovely frames for that
charming artist's deer with individual
hairs all glistening, the dark dewclaws
shining, and even the split in the
hoof flashing artistic light from its
edges. But the glittering tines, the
proud neck of the sculptured war
horse, the shaggy chest and bulging
rump with tail full of shining hairs
are not there except at long intervals
when you may rout an old fool out of
bed and get him twisted as to the

"I'll tell you phwat it is," she said.
