There were a large number of severe earthquake shocks, followed by a tidal wave. President D. B. Johnson, of Winthrop College, says that there were 800 applicants this year and nearly 300 had to be turned away because of failure to stand the entrance examination or for lack of accomodations. ;/ An attempt was made to wreck the Coast Line train No. 32 near Selma on the Columbia and Wilmington division one night laet week. The Dining Cir service on Florida Metropolitian Limited, trains 31 and 31 was, on October 2nd, extended to Jacksonville, Fla. This branch of the service on the Seaboard has become very popular for the reason that meals are served A la Carte and passengers may be served with light lunches or to any extent they may desire making orders cost very little or any price they may elect. A proposition has been introduced by the Prohibition party of Corband county, New York, which demands that every man who drinks intoxicating beverages shall take out a license costing not less than $5 a year. Every six months the names of the license holders are to be published in the official newspapers of the countyThe leaders propose to introduce a measure of this nature in the Legislature.
