her a telegram in the presence of the
writer, who had just been speaking
to her about her sister's illness.
The deceased, an amiable daughter
of the late Col. A. Mims of this place,

home in Greenwood, S C., where she
lived since her marriage to Mr. Edgar
Blake of that city.
The few years of her lovely maidenhood
and womanhood spent- among
us made an impress that time cannot
efface. All who knew her, know her
bat to love her. Gentle words and
smiles of kindness she had for all.
She was a devoted member of the
M. E. Church, South, and her Christian
character was exemplary. The
| writer remembers well with what
modest zeal and devotion she conducted
the Sunday school of her
church here, when no male member
could be secured this important
work to perform.
When Mr. Blake wooed and won

her heart, married her and took her
to hie home in Greenwood, how. we
missed her. Bat we knew that her
benign influence was taken elsewhere
to cheer and bless other hearts,
where she doubtless proved a veritable
halo of light and joy to the
husband of her love and the many
new made friends.
Death to her was a benediction,
a mere transition, a deliverance from
pain, a farewell to things of time, an
entrance into blessfal rest with her
Savior.
Mother, husband, brothers, sisters,
friends, by faith look up and behold
her "beautiful beckoning hands."

Politics make straoge enemies as
well as strange bed fellows. Who
would have imagined, a few years
8go, that in this year of grace 1902,
Capt John G. Capers would be en'
gaged in a political controversy with
Edmund Deas over the leadership of
that malodorous organization of political
grafters and place-hunters
known as the Republican party of
South Carolina? It is a surprising
and unedifying spectacle.
A Constitutional Amendment.
16 will be interesting to note that
there will be one constitutional
amendment to be voted upon at the
next general election. In a word it
is a proposition by which certain.
townships, which have issued township
railroad bonds for railroads that
have not been built, want to get out
of the bonded indebtedness. The
bonds were issued and got out of the
hands of the authorities, but the
railroads were not built, or have been
abandoned. Now eight townships
ask to have a constitutional amendment
passed, so that the corporate
existence of the same is to be destroyed
and all of the corporate
agents are removed. In a word the
townships are to be wiped out of
existence so as to get out of the rail
road bogded indebtedness. It appears
to be an excessively dangerous
method of getting out of a debt.
The people in the townships no
doubt have just reason to complain,
as they did Dot get the roads, but on
the other hand they seem to be
bringing on themselves no end of
trouble and are resorting to a remedy
which it is thought by many will
not hold in the courts. *

Few popular fallacies are of such
wide extent as the belief that a person
must rise to the surface three
timAB. no more and no lesR. before he
can possibly drown. There is little
ground for this supposition, although
it has been almost universally believed
in for generations. The truth
is that a drowning person may sink
the first time never to rise again, or
he may, as he indeed does in the
majority of cases, rise three times before
be sinks forever. It all depends
upon the quantity of water that he
swallows when he sinks and the size
of his lungs. The human body in
life naturally floats while the lungs
are inflated. As long aB one keeps
his head above the surface of the
water he can float, face up, without
having to move hand or foot. But
as soon as he sinks be gulps and imbibes
a quantity of water. If, after
he has swallowed water, he has any
air left in his lungs, he will undoubtedly
riee again, and will continue to
sink and riee alternately until all the
a'r is expelled from his longs, when
he will drown;

crowd gathered at the North American

to the Sheriff Deputies were sent
to the scene, but were held up and
kept out of the washery by the mob,
which surrounded it. The rioters
attacked and beat two employees.
