The first wa3 an action for damages by John Watts vs. Southern Railway Company, from forest fire, near Edmund. The case was brought by Messrs. Graham and I Crawford. Mr. Thompson appeared for the railroad. The verdict was [ $60. The-other cass was Eudocia J. i I Mitchell vs. John J. Barrs, for pos| session of realty, brought by Messrs. I Muller & Sfcurkie. The defense was I represented by Messrs. Efird & Dreher and Crawford. The verdict wa3 in favor of plaintiff and wa9 rendered on Saturday. This case was first tried about three years ago, when the verdict was for the defendant. The third week opened Monday, but nothing could be transacted until after the Columbia train arrived, bej cause of absence of some of the | attorneys. The case of Albert E Spires vs. Seaboard Air Line Railway , Co., came up at 3 p. m. This is an action for damages brought by Messrs. Graham and Crawford, and defended by Messrs. Efird & Dreher. The verdict was for $200, rendered I yesterday afternoon. Following this came the case of W. H. Gibb3 & Co., vs. J. Marshall Shealy, with Mr. J. P. Thomas for plaintiff and Messrs. Muller & Sturkie for defendants. The trial was begun yesterday afternooD, and this morn| iDg the arguments are in progress. The case will go to the jury by recess time. ? ? ? Obituary. Martha Elizabeth Hegmann,daughter of Reuben and Jemima Roof, was born January 2, 1833, departed this life September 28, 1902, makiDg her age 69 years, 8 months and 26 days. She was consecrated to God in infancy by Holy Baptism; took upon herself her baptismal vows at maturity bv connecting herself with St. - y / r? Peter's (Meetze'e) Evangelical Luthern church, of which she remained a faithful member until death. Was married to Otto Hegmann January 31, 1853, from which union was born six children, six grand-children, of which two children and one grandchild have preceded her to the "spirit land", leaving one son, three daughters, five grand-children, with a devoted husband, one brother, one sister, many other relatives and a host of friends to mourn their irreparable loss. Ia the absence of her pastor the funeral was conducted by Rev. W. E. Barre, at Pilgrim E. L. church, in the presence of a large concourse of people. J. A. C. Cotton Report. Hod. D. F. Edrd has been appointed special agent for Lexington county under the provisions of an act of Congress ratified on the 6 th day of March, 1902, to gather statistics in reference to the cotton crop in the Southern States. The gin at this place, which has recently been put up, is doing good work. The ginnery at Leesville is doing good and rapid work. There was a surprise marriage on the Middleburg Hill recently. The contracting parties were, Mr. Clarence Rskard and Miss Cora Hair. We wish these young folks a long and a happy life. The second protracted meeting on the Hill started Sunday by the Rev. James Steele, of Lexington. Hoping and trusting that it may be a meeting that will be long remembered and much good done. Mr. John Bell Towili and Mr. W. D. Harman, of this place, attended the children's day at Boiling Spring Saturday, and report a very nice oc casion. There will be another children's day at St. Matthews on Saturday before the Becond Sunday in October.
