position in the schools at Marion, we
are informed that he is charmed

Barre recently graduated from Clemson
College with a flittering record
for conduct and studiouBness. He is
a young man of rare moral habits and
lofty .Christian character and the people
ot Marion will find him to be
possessed of unusual scholarly attainments
and in every way worthy
of their confidence and esteem.

the traveling public This ferry is a
spanking new one built by Mr. T. E.
Campbell and is fitted up with the
latest improvements and travelers,
via the dirt road, can cross there
with safety and convenience. It is j
claimed that the distance between i
this place and Irmo has been shortened
some two or three miles by tbe
building of this road and the completion
of the ferry. Major J. H.
Counts and Julius E. Lorick are the
prime movers in the enterprise.
Furtick, the big dry goods merchant
of Columbia, has inaugurated
a closing out sale of odds and ends,
as well as standard summer and
early fall goods and is rushing them
off at prices never before heard of in
that citv. The tremendous crowds

which daily dock to his establish*
ment attest to the excellency of the
bargains and the value of the goods.
The wise and economical will go
there and secure some of the bargains
before they are all gone.
Congressman Lever has been unexpectedly
called to Washington by
telegram to attend to some important
official business, therefore will be unable
to fill his engagement at the picnic
tomorrow. This occasion he has
looked forward to with much pleasure
and it is a disappointment to him in
not being able to meet with the young
folk.
Sheriff Caughman and Constable,
P. H. Corley succeeded in capturing
Boston Jones, colored, last Saturday.
Jones is under indictment for assault
and battery of a high and aggravated
nature for which he was tried at the
September term of court, and resulted
in a mistrial. He was released on
bond and failing to appear at this
September term forfeited his bond
hence his arrest.
Lexingtonians in going to Columbia
to sell produce and do their trading
are reminded that they can find
comfortable and convenient quarters
in the wagon yard of Wm, Piatt, near
the post office. Take your wife or
sweetheart along and when they
shop visit the dry goods store of Mr.
Piatt and examine his pretty line of
dry goods, dress goods, notions and
millinery. He can suit the taste of
every customer both as to quality
and price.
The complaint is becoming general
from all over the State, that the dispensaries
are becoming as disgraceful
and as demoralizing as the open
bars were in the palmy days of the
low groggery.
Protracted services will begin in
the Methodist church iu this place
next Sunday. The pastor Rev. W.
E. Barre, will be assisted by Rev.
Mr. MartiD. The public generally
is invited to attend these services.
There will be some bloomiDg of
orange blossoms the coming fall and
winter judging from the budding appearance
now and the work sly cupid
is puting in.
