Croft defeats BelliDger for Congress
from the Second, and Aiken
Smith from the Third Districts. The
other Congressmen are: Legare, Finley,
Johnson, Scarborough and Lever.
There was a very good attendance
at the meeting of the State Committee
Friday night. As soon as the
committee had been called to order.
Col. Jones announced that the tabulation
of the figures had already been
earefully made from the official returns
by himself and Secretary Parks.
At once a committee of five was appointed,
with Governor McSweeney
as chairman, to examine the tabulation.
The chairman was then authorized
to find what constitutional amendments
are to be voted upon in the
^general election in November and
have tickets printed and sent to the
polls.
Col. Crews called the committee's
-attention to one of the rules requiring
voters to put ballots in their
proper boxes. He thought it was
wrong to throw out ballots placed in
the State box.
Mr. Williams showed that if such
votes were not thrown out a voter
can easily vote twice?say two tickets
for county offices and vice versa.
Col. Crews knew that the counting
of such tickets had been done and
he thought it right. He wanted the
matter settled and made uniform. He
finally moved that a county ticket if
bund in a State box and vice versa.
Mr. Blease moved to amend the
motion so that none be counted when
there was an excess of vote over the
poll list.
Governor McS weeney said he hoped
that the committee would throw more

If a man made the error in the box
it was bis own unfortnnate mistake.
The primary should be most carefully
guarded. Managers of elections
could tell the voter which box was
which. He wanted every white man
to vote and not lose his vote, but to
go to this extent would let in too
much laxity.
Col. Crews' motion was finally voted
down.
Gov. McSweeney then read the report
of the committee on tabulation,
showing the results given above, the
report being adopted.
Mr. Blease offered a resolution to
require ail clubs to reorganize before
the next primary election, as provided
in the State party constitution.
Some bad failed to do so this year,
be said. This resolution was merely
intended to be a warniDg. The
resolution was adopted.
The governor then offered a resolution
of thanks to Chairman Jones and
Secretary Parks, which was unanimously
adopted.
Col. Jones made a few appropriate
remarks complimenting the secretaries
who have served with him for
six years, Messrs. Gunter and Parks.

The Southern Kailway will in the
course of a few weeks put on a fast
mail train between New York and
New Orleans, which will reduce tl?
time between New York and Atlanta

management to add passenger equipment
as soon as the fast schedule has
been given a complete trial.

which he intimates that he does not
see that any good will inure to the
navy from the presence of the Congressmen
gives rise to the suspicion
that he is laughing in his sleeve while

A Negro Patriot.

Notably among the colored heroes
of the revolutionary was brave Austin
Dabney. of Georgia. His owner
craveniDgly refused to shoulder a
flint lock, but the negro offered to enlist
and. after some discussion, the
officers enrolled him. He was one
of the heroic b?nd who faced the
charge of the 71st Highland regiment
at Blackstock's farm, and turned
the crack troops of Europe in
open field, with rifle and musket
against the bayonet, and at Kettle
Creek Dabney was severely wounded.
After the war he was pensioned by
the United States government, and
received grants of land from Georgia.
For gallant service in the field he

ed, he earned money and educated
their eldest son, and wept for joy
when the youth was admitted to the

rushed out, shook his companion
in arms by the band, and bad
him lodged in his "quarters/1 or row
