Hogs and sheep will now have a rest. Monday is salesday and also a legal holiday. Both Dr. Timmerman and Senator Sharpe are defeated. Speaking of ducks, it takes greenbacks to catch canvassbacks. pf The nomination of U. X. Gunter, Jr., for Attorney General is conceded. Widows are not always as mournful as outward appearance would indicate. A busybody is a person who wastes a lot of time pointing out the duties of others. Mr. H. W. Koon now resides at the Swygert old place at BoiliDg Springs. The vote of oar "Baby" was very flattering?being practically unanimous. Miss Mary Fox, of Batesburg, is visiting her uncle, Mr. John J. Fox, in this place. S'r'-'-V Some of the candidates will now realize that "many are called, but few are chosen." .Rev. W. E. Shelton Mathias in this issue. Miss Sue Corley has closed her school at Smith Branch. She will reopen the school sometime this fall. A joint stock company is being organized to develop the water power of Broad river, at Bookman s, in this county. The battle of ballots is now on in earnest. On last Friday evening the teachers in attendance upon the Summer School were given a pleasant entertainment at Drafts' Hotel. | Mrs. Kreps, of Hebron section, is ? stopping with the family of Rev. A number of negroes left for Nashville, Tenn., Monday night. They go with Mr. George Herndon, the quarry man, to engage in some rock work there. Last Saturday was another dark day and lamps again had to be lighted to see how to work. But it was not as dark as yesterday was to some candidates. Yesterday was a genuine fall day. The morning was cloudy and in the afternoon a slow, cold, drizzly rain began falling, but the backbone of summer is not yet broken. On account of the scarcity of water at Florence church, the ordinance of Baptism will be administered at Lucas' pond on the second Sunday in September. The survey of the route of the Lexington and Columbia Electric Railway has been interrupted by the rain. It will be recommenced as soon as the weather permits. We had the pleasure of spending last Wednsday night with Mr. Walter F. Derrick. He has a comfortable home and a pleasant family and we enjoyed our stay beneath his roof. J. M. Horner, who held the position of dyer at the Lexington Mills, has ffoDe to Canton, Ga, to accept a o - position as overseer of the dying establishment of the Canton Mills. An accident occurred on the Co- ' lumbia, Newberry and Laurens railroad near Sligh's last Sunday morning in which the engineer, train hand and a negro tramp were injured and the negro fireman killed. The train hand is seriously injured and the rest but slightly hurt. There is a new flat at Wyse's Ferry which is a great improvement over the old one and adds to the convenience in crossing. Bob now wants a new wire rope instead of the old chain and then he can cross the public with neatness and dispatch. The defeated candidates should not feel sore over the decision of the ? 1 _ majority, xne people nave spoaen and by their decision all should be contented. Thursday night while in the Fork, we had the pleasure of shopping with our triend J. Calhoun Shealy, the latch strings of whose door we always find on the outside. He has an excellent family and we were very pleasantly entertained. Mr. B. I. Hayes, a well-known citizen of this county, died at the home of his son, in Columbia, last Tuesday morning, at the age of 74 years. His remains were brought to Lexington today and interred in the George family burying ground near this place. The candidates for county offices addressed the factory operatives last Friday night and all made capital | speeches They also spoke at Red i Hant Srthirdav hnt.h in the after noon and evening. There was large ^attendances at all three of these meetings. W. S. WesBinger was born Oct. 30, 1867, and died August 7, 1902, being at death in his 34r.h year. Thus the strong, the manly, the robust are cut down in a day. We can but say: "Oh! man prepare to meet thy God." He connected himself with the Baptist church about 16 years ago.
