Perhaps he more than any other man can bring harmony out of discord, peace out of strife and union out of division. His name at the head of the Democratic . ticket would inspire confidence in its policies and increase the chances of ! its success. David B. The proposition is ! not mentioned in a large per cent, of ; the counties, and in those where it J is it is only referred to incidentally. ; This indifference on the part of poli- j ticians goes to show that the propo- ! sition is not at all popular with the j people. Great heavem! what a record to boa6fc of? Twice tariff reform successful in 42 year^I And what a black spot those successes has left upon the pages of American history? The experiment with tariff reform has placed a debt of many million dollars upon the people of the United States and forced the government to issue interest bearing gold bonds in time of peace to meet the requirements of a bankrupted national treasury. Tariff reform precipited the most disastrous financial and business panic this country has ever witnessed in which business was congested from inactivity, industry paralyzed and labor demoralized. The success of tariff reform as it did then so it will do again, make 5 cent cotton and empty dinner pails. The j experiment is entirely too costly to , be tried again. Twice in 42 years is j twice too often. If the Democratic j party expects to be successful in the next national election it must brush aside the cobwebs of antiquity and adopt a platform whose planks are broad and elastic enough to meet all every demand of all the interests of our ranidlv erowinsr country. Washington, July 1C ?A high official of the government gives cut the following statement concerning the negotiations pending in Rome. | Substantially these facts were cabled i to Governor Taft in the latest instructions as a basis of his reply to the veticaD: "Seeking through Gov. Taft to secure the peaceful removal of the friars of the four orders from the Philippine islands, the American rep- j resentatives in the Philippine islands I have merely been endeavoring faith- j fully to carry out the wishes of the people. It is not the United States government which in any way objects to the presence of the friars iu the iolon/^o TVio Iqtt olmnof lOACAiaVAO* XUU J VUVU^llVO to a man. and practically all of the parish priests, will not permit them to come back to the parishes and hold their lands in hostile possession." One of the avowed objects of the insurrectionary government under Aguinaldo was to confiscate the friar's lands without any compensation to the Church. The United States authorities, recognizing the intensity and bitterness of this feeling among the Filipinos, but desirous of the most scrupulous fairness toward the Church, were willing to arrange for the purchase of the Church lands by the government, if the Church authorities would withdraw the friars who are not now and who for years have not been performing their religious functions among the p<o?lr, and would replace them by other ixiembe-s of the Church who might take up with greater success the highly necessary religious work which they are no longer able to per iorm. If they get work it is at a small wage or salary; they must live in cheap boarding houses; pass from them to cheap ! tenements if they havetbecoaragBto | marry; find more and more that their | position is one of anxious dependence, and their imaginary charms of city life disappear, to leave nothing ! but the depressing reality of buildings jammed together to the exclu| sion of light and air, cf an all pervading noise and dirt, cf a routine which gives nothing but a bare subsistence in the present and holds out no promise for the future. In a vast majority of cases such must be the result, and while country life may have some serious drawbacks, it is plain that these young men make a capital mistake when they come to consider the question of opportunity through contempt of their familiar surroundings. If, instead of indulging in dreams of fortune building in the city, they were to master thoroughly all the work of the farm, cultivate an internaf in if n npw infplliorppcp tn it. *v, W. ?^ ' 0_ - - 7 take over the land of their fathers, or acquire others by purchase, put into this life all the ambition of their dream, they would do better in the end than 90 per cent of the city people; have a greater intellectual stimlus in their employment, get a greater enjoyment out of living, and attain to en enviable independence. The opportunity is close at hand, if they will only see it, and it adds to the anomaly of the situation that while they are neglecting their natural advantage disillusioned city men past the prime of life are "retiring" to farms, where they waste their substance in foolish experiments, owing to their belief that any one can be a farmer. But those poor competitors do not count, and if the farm boy will stick to the farm and make a science of agriculture his success is assured. Brain Food Nonsense.
