Mrs. Susie Soz Dies Suddenly.
- Mrs. Susie Sox, wife of Mr. John
Sox, died suddenly at her home,
about three miles from this place
last Friday afternoon at the age of
49 years, 1 month and 9 days. In
the morning of this day she was
stricken down with what is supposed
to have been a stroke of paralysis
and all that tender hands and loving
hearts could do and medical skill
suggest was done to give her relief,
but without avail and in the afternoon
her gentle spirit winged its
everlasting flight to the far away
home of the soul in the beautiful
Beulah land. She died in the
triumph of Christian hope, with the
blessed assurance that there remaineth
a rest for the people of God.
She was a consistent member of ZioD
Lutheran church and in the discharge
of her Ubristam ana social amies sne
was faithful and acted well her part.
She leaves a large family, who have
the sympathy of their friends and
neighbors.
She was buried Sunday from her
home, the Rev. J. A. Cromer, her
pastor, assisted by the Rev. E. L.
Lybrand, conducted the funeral services
in the presence of about 1,000
persons, after which the casket containing
her earthly remains was
laid away in the family burying
ground.

KNITTING IN PARLIAMENT."
Not So Many Years Ago Men Did the
Knitting For Scotland.
Quite a thrill of surprise was caused
by a Scottish member of parliament
who was recently observed calmly
knitting a stocking while waiting in
the smoking room of the house of commons.
At the present day the sight of
a man plying the knitting needles is a
novel one, though in the remoter parts
of Scotland it is not at all uncommon.
Less than half a century ago. however,
the greater part of the stockings (
worn were knitted by the men folk. |
the women confining their attention ;
more or less to spinning.
The shepherd starting out" at the 1
break of dav to his duties on the hill !

would as soon have forgotten his lunch j
of oaten cakes and barley bannocks as j
his knitting needles and wool. As he
trudged through the heather on his
visit to each part of his wide scattered
flock or directed from a convenient
height the rounding up efforts of

plied their task.
Even the well to do farmer as he
chatted with a friend of markets and
"nowt" (cattle) could ill bear to see
the minutes wasted, and the "click,
click" of his needles bore witness to
his diligence.
Such industry seems strange to the
present day mind, but what else had
they to occupy their minds and time?
Newspapers, as we know them now,
there were absolutely none. Once a
week or less frequently a small local
sheet would circulate among the well
to do homes.
As for books, these were often limited
to the Bible auu "The Pilgrim's
! Progress." Of games there were but
few, and for the most part these wer?

Curiously enough, that article now
considered almost indispensable, the
table napkin, was first used only by
children and was adopted by elder I
members of the family about the middle
of the fifteenth century. In etiquette
books of an earlier date than
this among other sage pieces of advice
for children are instructions about wipj

It seems that the tablecloth was long
enough to reach the tloor and served
the grown people in place of napkins.
When they did begin to use napkins,
they placed them first on the shoulder,
then on the left arm and finally tied
them about the neck.
