The Clemson Matter.
Said to Be More Back of It Than Has
Come Out.
Columbia Evening Record, May 1.
It was rumored around tbe city
this morning that there was considerably
more back of the expulsion of
# E. E. Thorn well from Clemson college
than had been brought cut.
TfcornweU was cnargea wun isking
seme test tubes from tbe class
room against an order that had just
been issfied, and he was expelled.
The whole sophomore class, of which
he was a member, left in sympathy.
One of the Clemson boys stated
this morning that the faculty had
had it in for the whole class for some
time. About a month ago some one
broke into the commissary supply
house, and, in a spirit of mischief,
took several pounds of supplies. The
facnltv. for some reason, suspected
^ , -
some member of the sophomore class
and came down on the whole crowd
with enforcement of a set of rules
that had never been heard of befoie.
When the test tnbe affair came up,
Thornwell was sent home, and the
boys, thinking it strange that such
drastic punishment should be resorted
to, commenced to investigate the
matter at once.
They claim to have received information
from an authoritative source
that the faculty was playing even for
the commissionary episode, and accordingly
the class left in a body.
They say that Thornwell was not
connected with the commissary busi^
ness and that there will be some hot
statements issued in a few days from
members of the clas9.
One of them received a telegram
' Am a mfimKav r\f tVa 1 nriinr place
XXUUU a UJVUiVVi Ul juuivt V*w?vw
this morning stating that the entire
body of college students were standing
by them, and unless Colonel
Simpson would reinstate Thonwell
and the other boys the rest would
leave the college. He will be given
a few days to render his decision.
The boys say that if a committee,
made up of legislators, lawyers or
any other body of men, was appointto
look into the matter, they are
satisfied that a decieion would be
rendered in their favor.
The whole affair is very much regretted
here and sympathy seems to
be evenly divided between the students
and the faculty.
It has been learned that President
Hartzog wrote a very*insulting letter
to Dr. Thornwell in regard to his
son's conduct, and he intends to
make President nartzog apoiog ze
for the same. .This is another chspter
in the sffair aEd wilt no doubt
prove an important one, as Dr.
Thornwell is one of the most popular
' Presbyterian ministers in the Sta^e
and has numerous friends who will
stand by him to the bitter end.
Since the sophomore class left the
college in a body the junior and freshman
class made arrangements to do
likewise. Col. Simpsou, the chairman
of the Board of Trustees, learning
of this appeared before the stu
dents the evening before their contemplated
leaving and persuaded
them to remain and await the action
of the Trustees at their meeting in
' June. i

An old schorls house is enough to

then both justice and equity demand

Yon May Learn Something: From Everybody

Daniel Webster once made a great
hit in arguing a case before a jury by
repeating a story which he afterward
said he had not thought of since he
heard it fourteen years before. But
"Webster was always picking up something
for future use. His famous reply
to Hayne, the greatest speech ever delivered
on the American continent, was
largely made up of little reserves which
he had picked up here and there in his
reading, from studying men and from
observation.
Many a prominent novelist has collected
materia! for his stories by making
notes of his conversations with
those he has met and by observation.
Charles Dickens got a great deal of the
matter for some of his novels in this
way.

the helpful, inspiring words of some

He will drink in the speaker's

the address he will determine that he

he ever was before. Such a young man

he talks to. The other has no ambition.
